Mono Lake Tufas

Description: It's odd to think this geologically interesting area of California used to be a research facility ran by the US Navy.

Now the area is a California State Natural Area, set aside to protect the unique tufas that like the South shore of

Very late entry! #StillFridaySomewhere

I think we can all agree that the perfect place to play a sensitive power ballad is on the shores of a highly alkaline volcanic lake in inland California, decorated by bizarre limestone pillars! #tufa

These rocks that look a bit like limestone cave formations growing on a substrate of basalt (a rock not known for growing such things) are tufa (calcium carbonate) that were deposited with the help of algae, so said the sign at Picnic Cave, a short way down the ledge. It means cyanobacteria, blue-green algae. Tufa forms underwater. These were formed when Lake Lahontan covered over the area, likely when its height was controlled by overflow over Darwin Pass, which is about the same height.

Something like flow stone. Calcium carbonate rounds in a flowing look. The rock underneath is exposed at the bottom, a red basalt.Rounds and edges of calcium carbonate tufa structures that have built up and broken over the years between.

Back to US-50, I completed the circle through Nevada with one last little hike joining a pair of interpretive trails outside Fallon. The interpretive trail at Grimes Point showcases the 8000 year old petroglyphs of the area. The interpretive trail at Hidden Cave showcases the geology including the tufa with its human connections.

A little of the landscape seen at Grimes Point. The hill to the right is the actual "point".

A rock lined path winds through the desert. Well used, it is full of footprints and devoid of plants. Plants do grow on the far side of the rocks. Dark boulders stick up out of the gravely ground. Along the right, an edge of hills undulates showing one hill close and another quite far off. The left is a gentle slope downward to the left. Overhead, the sky has a thin covering of cloud with blue showing through in many places.Deep holes in a dark basalt rock are one of the older petroglyphs in the area.

The boulder in question dominates the lower half of the photo while others scattered behind pop up out of ground with sparse vegetation. In the distance, a hill with distinct levels of plateau rises.View from the high connector trail between the two loops.

Trail extends on the left side. It is not rock lined like the other, but still well established through the sparse desert vegetation. Small rocks are on the right. It travels a high plateau that ends up ahead showing a wide canyon area that opens onto the wide valley off to the right. More hills are visible on the far side where the plateau begins again. All under thin, wispy cloud.Interpretive trail sign 1 on the Hidden Cave Interpretive Loop. This one marks another petroglyph that is much younger (only 500-2000 years old).

The rock on the right has shapes like animals pecked out in its dark desert varnish. They have darkened to a brown already. On the left is a sign with a big "1" on the post and information on the top. Behind are desert brush on a gentle hillside rising to the left. The sun obscures the distance.

Not being a geologist, this is somewhat beyond me:

"...were formed during the regression period. Most geochemical and geomorphological data suggest that the deposition processes and morphologic features of the Antalya Tufa are 👉related to sea level changes and climatic forcing rather than to tectonics.👈 In addition to the geological settings of ,..."

#Calcite can form when cool groundwater warms as it rises to the surface. Calcium carbonate exhibits inverse solubility -it's less soluble in warmer water. As a result #tufa deposits can form -like those at Mono Lake. A nice write up of groundwater carbonate deposits at:

🪴Today is the day I move my shivering potted plants indoors. After an unseasonably warm autumn, night temps will reach freezing this weeekend here in Brooklyn. Most of them make the transition easily, but not so much the oxalis and lavenders. I wish I had a greenhouse to keep them cool…while I and the succulents stay warm and cozy inside. 🪴
