Eight years ago today, I went on strike as a member of the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation. We struck against the University of Oregon. I walked this picket line for 8 days in the rain in early December and we WON 100% of our demands--an absolute total victory. Today, 8 years later, University of California is on strike. Spent a good chunk of today talking to #uaw2865 and #sruuaw grad student workers about the #fairUCnow strike. It’s clear how much they care about their work and want to resume, but are also fed up with UC’s inability to bargain.

I can’t wait to help them in their work when the strike is over.

In higher education and research, a short strike - even a historically massive one, even one with total shutdowns - does not immediately cause a total crisis of the workplace. The UC is not an auto plant or a fulfillment center. We must adapt our strategic orientation to our specific worksite. In our case, it is the steady accumulation of missed instruction hours, especially late in the quarter, along with the passing of deadlines for finals, grades, and research grants, that truly accumulates the pressure we put on the administration. It is therefore unsurprising that we would not have seen much movement yet from UC's side. Contrary to those who are pessimistic about our power, we think we are approaching a major point of leverage with a stunning depth of organization by workers on every campus." The urgent question is how we can best prepare ourselves to wield it.

#UC academic workers are likely to #strike. These workers are responsible for discussions, grading, student support, even lectures sometimes. They do the vast majority of work and are paid a pittance for it. They deserve higher wages and better working conditions, but the UC refuses to engage in good faith. Now 98% have voted to strike.
