The role of microinteractions and small details in UX design

Microinteractions play a huge role in UX design despite being labelled “micro”. They include all the small details you can find in a software product, i.e. animations, emotive reactions, clicks, vibrations, etc. Not only do they make it more interesting and joyful for users to interact with a product, they also help ease the navigation process and make it more intuitive by providing important information. Which types of microinteractions can be used in apps, what makes them a vital part of software products, how to implement them correctly and which common mistakes to avoid when designing small details? Today I was going to implement background queuing/batching of updates, but was too tired, so instead I polished the UI a bit.
✅ Minimap in the sidebar
✅ Interactive minimap
✅ Improved the "add a Part" toolbar, though it still needs more love.

More progress on Parts! Got a first version of the relationships between different parts working, plus improved the editing experience. #ClojureScript #UIx #InternalFamilySystems

This has to be the most annoying UIX ever created.

Both rows are called "Source control" but their "..." options are not the same.

Of course the lower one (the only one you'll need to push and pull) is hidden half of the time so you'll always click on the useless top one first (used to set what pannel you want to display, you'll need this maybe once in your life).

AHHHHHHHHHH

A picture of the Git part of Visual Studio Code.

I highlighted (in yellow, top right corner) two very similar "..." menus next to each other.

I do not understand this. My macbook air lid is closed and it still captures the bluetooth connection, without any readily visible options to turn this very invasive and annoying behaviour off. What an unmitigated UIX disaster.

Who came to the conclusion that the ideal way to write post in the web version of was a supertiny little box that does not even grow as you type?

Tbh, the sorts of noises I made at #SelfCheckouts were likely more than enough to guide Franklin and his crew safely back across the #tundra.

But fearing an #aneurysm, I have taken to standing patiently at a regular checkout until someone who works there notices and drops by to ring up my purchases.

(Generally, I end up not being the only one queueing up by the time help arrives. 😂)

10 certain indicators of a well-done UX design

UX design is the backbone of any digital product like an app or a website. It’s like a “dark horse” of a product: it’s something that is not always visible to a naked eye, but without it a product would be very hard or even impossible to use. In the meantime, it’s very easy to tell apart an optimized, well-done UX from a poorly implemented one. The latter can not only turn users away from a product, but also make a negative impact on the brand perception as a whole, as it plays a great role in customer satisfaction. Of course, each product has its own UX quality criteria, as it depends on different factors like the theme of a product, age of the target audience and so on. But there are also a few general indicators of a well-done UX that are applicable to any product no matter what. Let’s discuss them:

With the latest release, we've introduced a new frontend router for UIX. When navigating between routes inside of your app, the page is no longer reloaded, only the content is replaced.

Eternal labels in UIX

Just discovered this. macos does not support window tiling ? !! There must be some twisted logic here and I'd love to know more about it.

Every day I use this system I am more confident that it was designed by someone really into 'ricing' up their system - like me, when I was 15 and into gaudy primary colours and swooshing windows effects.

What a waste of computing power.

This is how to use UIX entrypoints for route definitions inside your app:
◆ Step 1: Create a file entrypoint.tsx in either frontend or backend directory
◆ Step 2: Create a default export for your content. Voilà - you're done!

Remember, the point here (there is a point to all this, yes!) is to improve my accessibility with a washer and dryer interface, not throw me into an endless loop of quirkly language-oriented obsessions!

Now, among close friends, I am well known to be frustated by #interfaces that seem as complex as something the #nuclearIndustry needs for managing a reactor or starting Armageddon.

Indeed, with the same sorts of chips being used in all sorts of different devices, I am *slightly* worried that navigating the complexity of refuelling my vehicle might accidentally trigger said Armageddon.

Who knows where those codes could be hidden, amirite???!? 😳😬😂

This design looks pretty enough but seems a poor choice for selector buttons where it is reasonable to expect the user to want to know what category of things is being selected.

These buttons are, effectively, the names expected at the top of each column in a chart. Without them, you have to guess at the actual category by the options in the columnar list.

That's a lot of extra mental work to go through just to throw on a load of laundry. 🙄

I get it, I get it: Sometimes, a design just looks pretty.

But these pretty selector buttons on a brand new washer-dryer pair (Leon's, L2 store brand) are utterly ridiculous to the point of making labels on them pointless.

Pale grey 12-point gothic (Helvetica-ish), flush with a smooth, reflective silver convex surface that makes the text readable only from about ankle-height!

Me holding a transparent E-scale typesetting ruler over selector button to determine the type size is 12 pts.

It slipped slightly when phtographing, sorry!
