Found this really cool video of an iOS engineer showing real time specular shading based on the lights around you. Look I am not a fan of Liquid Glass in its current instance. However, I am still a fan of technical feats. Apple first introduced this in Apple wallet to cards and esp the Apple Card. Now they’ve made it part of the OS.

Design considerations aside, the technical feat is impressive.

Much like the genetic engineering behind Jurassic Park was impressive.

Every once in a while a post is made that must be celebrated, archived and lauded for the pithy zinger it is.

I am not arguing for maximalist icon designs anymore. However, there’s no denying that Apple used to have great icon designs (and icon designers). However, what’s clear is that Apple doesn’t believe it’s a meaningful value differentiator for them anymore and when you know that you are not putting in the investment to make that meaningful, of course you don’t want the rest of the world to surpass you and it becomes mandatory squircle-cide.

This isn’t limited to Apple though – this downslide seems more associated with “brand synergy”

Adobe’s total lack of personality has some personality to it while it looks like Google just went – I am primary colors and Microsoft split the difference. Weirdly, given its novelty, Apple’s icons are the ones lacking complete recognition – other than Keynote, I wouldn’t recognize any of the other icons anywhere. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Related, this is my absolute favorite Apple icon
