SOMERVILLE, MA — "The city’s Emergency Overnight Warming Center is opening next week for the winter season, the office of Mayor Katjana Ballantyne announced.

"The facility located on the second floor of the former #CummingsSchool at 42 Prescott St. is slated to open on Monday, Dec. 8 and remain open until April 12 of 2026. It will be open seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Malden-based nonprofit Housing Families was credited for helping the center expand to bed 45 people on a nightly basis for this year. In addition to sleeping quarters, adults facing homelessness will be given hot meals, housing navigation, and case management services.

"The center is accepting donations of nonperishable food and hygiene products."

"The Malden #WarmingCenter (MWC) seeks to serve those adult individuals experiencing homelessness by providing safe shelter and warmth during the winter months, recognizing each person’s inherent dignity and unique circumstance. We operate only December 1 to March 31 every year, seven nights a week from 7:00pm - 7:30am.

The MWC is a temporary night center for those adult individuals that are homeless. It is a safe place of warmth during the harshest winter months. LA CROSSE (WKBT) — "The City of La Crosse activated an emergency day center Monday morning in response to a cold weather advisory that begins Sunday night.

"Per a notice from community risk educator Molly McCormick, the emergency shelter operates from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 713 St. James Street, providing a warm, safe space for community members during dangerous cold temperatures.

"Free bus transportation helps people reach the center. Route 6 Northside departs from the transit center at 7:42 a.m., while the return trip leaves from St. James and Caledonia streets at 12:25 p.m.

"All visitors must check in when they arrive. Staff will store personal belongings in secure containers. The center allows people to come and go as needed, but pets and open containers are not permitted. Water is provided for guests."

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - "The return to more January-like conditions made for one of the busiest days on record for a Bangor warming center.

"By 9:30 a.m. Friday, The Well, located off Center Street, had 73 people checked in.

"They offer breakfast and lunch, laundry, and a hot shower. It’s also a chance to be seen by a medical professional.

"Open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. six days a week, the crew tells WABI they work to meet people where they’re at.

" 'I have experienced other places in the Bangor area that are meant to be helping the homeless,' explained warming center user Kerry Robinson. 'There is nothing compares to this.'

" 'There’s a lot of mental illness that’s not being taken care of,' said Jericho Road Street Ministry, President, Mel Coombs. 'Some of the mental illness is treated, but they lose their medication because they are homeless, and they don’t have a proper storage for the medication. We love everybody that comes through our door. We don’t discriminate at all. I don’t think housing is the answer. It would help, but it’s not a long-term solution. I spoke to the city council the other day, and I basically told them the same thing. That’s not the answer. I don’t have the answers, but hopefully we’re here until somebody comes up with the right solution.'

"The Well is operated by Jericho Road Ministry. They are a 501 3C non-profit and run solely on donations.

"They accept money but are also happy to take clothing and other items to help people get though the colder months."

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Winter has arrived in Maine and that means snow and cold. It also means many people will be looking for places to stay warm.

There are several winter-long overnight warming shelters that are now open.

The new Alter L/A Emergency Warming Shelter opened on Monday on Horton Street in #LewistonME. That shelter, the first of its kind in #AndroscogginCounty, is open 24/7 for the winter.

In #AugustaME, the South Parish Congregational Church at 34 Bridge St. is open from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. every day from Nov. 1 until April 30 for people to get warm.

There are two overnight warming shelters in #BangorME. The Mansion Church at 96 Center St. is open from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. every day from Nov. 1 until March 31.

The Brick Church at 126 Union St. in Bangor is open from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. from Nov. 15 until April 15. The door there locks at 9 p.m. and no one is allowed in after that. There is a community supper on weekdays between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Work is underway on a new warming center at the Somesville Union Meeting House at 1134 Main St. in #MountDesertME. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as needed, but does not have overnight accommodations. The goal is for this shelter to be open starting Jan. 12, 2026."

Portland Opens Remote #WarmingCenter for the #Homeless as #BitterCold Moves In

"With temperatures expected to plunge into dangerous territory beginning Thursday, Portland officials will activate the city’s winter warming center, a facility located well outside the downtown core and accessible primarily by shuttle.

The warming center, housed at 166 Riverside Industrial Parkway, will open on any night when temperatures fall to 15 degrees or below or when 10 inches or more of snow is forecast. On activation nights, the facility operates from 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. and can serve up to 60 adults needing emergency overnight shelter.

The site, already used as an migrant shelter, doubles as a winter refuge through a divided layout that separates the two populations. Those staying overnight will have access to beds, restrooms, and showers.

Because the building sits roughly five miles from downtown, the city will again rely on a free shuttle system to transport people to and from the warming center – a point of ongoing criticism from residents and service providers who say the remote location presents accessibility challenges.

Shuttles will operate from 7:30 p.m. to midnight and again from 4:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Riders can request pickup by calling 207-810-6727. During shelter hours, the General Assistance contact line is 207-482-5122.

City officials have defended the location, calling it the only workable option heading into winter despite continued concerns about distance, transportation gaps, and the strain on staff and emergency resources.

For now, with freezing temperatures approaching, the city’s temporary warming center will again serve as a critical, if imperfect, lifeline for Portland’s unhoused residents."
