The Loft:
šµ Ten Years
The Loft are an English indie band, whose debut single was one of the earliest releases on Creation Records.
History
Formed in 1980 as The Living Room by Peter Astor (vocals, guitar), Bill Prince (bass), Andy Strickland (guitar) and Dave Morgan (drums), the band changed its name when they discovered a local music venue also called The Living Room. The venue was being run by Alan McGee, with whom The Loft struck up a friendship and played several gigs for. After signing to McGee's fledgling Creation Records label, the debut single "Why Does the Rain?" was issued in 1984. "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" was issued the following year, earning both band and label some critical success.

Peter Buck, Warzone Earth, 2015 on Mississippi Records
This is the third solo album from the former R.E.M. guitarist, all on Portland ORās Mississippi Records. Frequent Buck collaborators present here include Scott McCaughey, Kurt Bloch, and William Rieflin. Buckās wife Chloe Johnson adds harmony vocals on āSaturday Sunday Mondayā and Jeff Tweedy guests on āWorld Spins Around You.ā
Itās a mixed bag ā I love Peter Buck but sometimes think he needs an editing eye ā but some great stuff.
Recorded at Type Foundry in Portland by Adam Selzer.
My copy, with the āHelicopterā cover, via Crossroads Records in Portland OR ā thereās also a version with a āCarā cover.

"Friction is common among people working on a shared goal, but it's especially distressing at The Loft, a holy space in underground music culture designed to transcend human pride. Built on a manifesto of egalitarianism, friendship and inclusivity, the get-together is modelled as a family-style reunion. Lofters are supposed to practise compassion and care with each other, not point fingers. "It's a scandal and David is turning in his grave now," lamented Giancarlo Bianchi, founder of Italy's The Last Note, a sister Loft party that he launched with Mancuso's blessing in 2013. "All of us feel sad and shocked by what has happened in New York." "ā

"With the mirror ball the unifying point, David selected music in conversation with his dancers so they could embark on a collective, unfolding journey that helped them to relax their egos and enter a heightened plane of consciousness that touched the vibrational, interconnected, material-spiritual essence of the universe. David spent a lifetime shaping the Loft to fulfil this goal. Is this what Louis Vuittonās approach to clothing design is really about? Can we access the essence of what it is to be human, entering into a form of collective joy and maybe experiencing a form of cosmic transcendence, by putting on a pair of shoes, a shirt, matching trousers and a jacket? Is this what goes down in the changing rooms of Louis Vuittonās stores?"āTim Lawrence [David Mancuso & Louis Vuitton] >

1000 Day Album Challenge (#89) Manu Dibango: Soul Makossa (1973) [29.03.24]
mama ko mama sa maka makossa / mama ko mama sa maka makossa
mama ko mama sa maka makossaā¦
I believe this record entered my life during my late thirties or early forties. I felt like I remembered the song from when I was a kid, but that memory seemed too fleeting to be certain that it was genuine. if I heard it I certainly didnāt recall that the artist was Manu Dibango, a saxophonist from Cameroon.
Soul Makossa is one of the most important records in the development of disco and dance culture. it was the first record to break in the clubs and then become a Top 40 hit. it reached #35 on the Billboard charts. it was unearthed by the legendary David Mancuso, who discovered it in a small record store in a West Indian neighborhood in Brooklyn. it became a staple at his party, The Loft, and was subsequently played by the Chief Rocker, Frankie Crocker on WBLS.
subsequent generations might recognize it because of Michael Jackson interpolating the soul makossa chant within Wanna Be Startinā Somethinā featured on Thriller. that section was then sampled by Rihanna in Donāt Stop the Music. it has gone onto be sampled dozens of times.
New Bell is the other canāt miss track here. I donāt mean to be dismissive to say that it follows the same formula as Soul Makossa. when a formula works it worlds. New Bell has a driving rhythm with some fantastic sax played over the top of it. for a dancefloor it should be like honey to a bee.

Just a heads up that this Saturday, I'm* teaching an inexpensive online class on how to navigate "revise and resubmit" agent rejections. The goal is to share strategies for revisions that go deep enough to get the right agent to commit to representing your novel. Link to more info + registration here:
https://loft.org/classes/troubleshooting-revise-and-resubmit-rejection
* = indie editor of 20 years, novelist with a Big Five press, good at this.
I may or may not have come up with this class after a conversation here.
The Magical Object In Fiction: Objects can be props, but they can also accumulate greater meaning. We'll start with the functional objects already in most stories & turn them into reflections of character, conduits for intimacy, motifs, & powerful metaphorsācreating dimension, complexity, & resonance in our stories.
7/12 - 8/22 Online & Asynchronous
I wrote about a story from Farah Ali's The People Want to Live and the way a simple description can come to life through the layering of seeming contradiction.
