Once again we find Art Editor Walter Liu scratching his head as he wonders what makes someone an artist and why they’d want that in the first place.

Title card for story ‘Art Versus Commerce’ featuring an old Canadian $500 bill in French with a classical nude painting on it.Screenshot of the article text. First paragraph reads: I never thought I’d be the one waxing poetic about art but get ready because that’s where we’re going. Like, what even is it? What’s the point?
For a living I create visuals for video games. I don’t design them, that’s someone else’s job. My job is to make them happen in real time in the game. I reproduce other people’s creativity. Rick Ruben says that art is created for art’s sake while art created for financial gain is commerce. One isn’t better than the other but they are different. I create ‘art’ for commerce and don’t feel the need to call myself an artist.
But who is?

This week your loyal literary editor tries to parse out what it is he loves about his home town of Brownlow, Ontario. I hope you enjoy ‘The Brownlow School,’ by literary editor Gregaro McKool.

Title card for 'The Brownlow School' featuring a black and white drawing of a movie clapperboard. Studio: County Fence. Production: Socialist Extravaganza. Director: Greg McKool.Screencap of the article text. First paragraph reads: What is Brownlow even for? I’ve been asking myself that question my entire life because it doesn’t seem like even Brownlow knows. I’m not sure it’s had to. Until recent years people just tended to stick close to where they were born so identity didn’t really matter, it just formed naturally. I even moved back without knowing the answer, I just wanted a cheap place that would let me write not too far from the rest of the world. But now I realize that is the answer.

Title cart for ‘River’s Place,’ by art editor Walter Liu. White on black drawing of a ramshackle log cabin with a shipping container addition and greenhouse made of old screen doors.Screencap of the beginning of the article. First paragraph reads: River’s ‘studio’ is straight-up the kind of place my parents warned me about. They’d tell me that they didn’t immigrate to Canada so I could hang out at grow ops on the rez without cell service. Yet last week I parked my car beside a cornfield, said goodbye for what I hoped was not the last time, and started walking down an ancient stone fence marking the edge of said cornfield.

Since art editor Walter Liu couldn’t find the local art scene the local art scene found him. And they’re not so sure they like what they found.

Title card for ‘The Art Show,’ a white on black line drawing of a Harley Davidson motorcycle over a giant molar.Screencap of the article. First paragraph reads: So I guess it’s not as hard to find out what’s going on around here as I made out in my first article, I just don’t know how to look. That’s what the local arts scene told me, anyway. Or rather they told Jules who told me. In any case, it got me an invitation to a show that I still have no idea how I would have known about. I guess if you know you know and I just don’t, which is a me problem. Or so I’m told. Anyway, I thought I’d give it a fair shake.

📚✨ Unpopular Opinion (but we stand by it):

A good book doesn’t just entertain—it should challenge your taste, sharpen your thoughts, and whisper truths no one dares say out loud.

If you’re reading only for comfort, you’re missing the crown jewel of literature: transformation. 👑

Saturday nights are for stories that stay with you. What’s the last book that rearranged your mind?

Concannon By Clifton Adams. Fantasic. A Detective-Western that takes place in 1893 Oklahoma City. 23 thumbs up.

A picture of a paperback called Concannon by Clifton Adams. The cover show a mustached man who vaguely looks like charles bronson or middle aged josh brolin smiling wearing a duster and a pistol on a gunbelt. In one hand he holds a cigar and in the other a bundle of dynamite. A red starburt blued on one side says in all caps “Easy Read Western.”
