Weekend reading! Just finishing Slow Horses by Mick Herron & then it's onto these. I really liked the first two full-length Amanda De Wees books so the novella should be good. Have to admit the later Deborah Coonts books in the Lucky O'Toole series lost me a bit but fingers crossed for this penultimate one in the series

Synopsis to Christmas at Gravesend by Amanda De Wees: In December 1873, Sybil’s former dressmaker, Clara Graves—now a baroness—invites Sybil and Roderick to celebrate Christmas at Gravesend Hall, notorious for being cursed. Anxious for her old friend, Sybil is quick to accept. Though Clara insists that nothing is wrong, once the revelers are snowbound, there are cries in the night and an eerie phantom lady walking the halls. But though Sybil is ready to come to grips with a ghost, not all is as it seems...and when she and Clara team up to solve the mystery, they find a way to bring a heartbroken young mother the best Christmas gift she could imagine.

Weekend reading! Enjoying The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd at the 1/2 way mark. Next up, I'm really looking forward to Doctor Galaxy by Jenny Schwartz.

Synopsis to The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd: What is the purpose of a map?

Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn’t seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over an old, cheap gas station highway map.

But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable and exceedingly rare. In fact, she may now have the only copy left in existence... because a mysterious collector has been hunting down and destroying every last one—along with anyone who gets in the way.

But why?

To answer that question, Nell embarks on a dangerous journey to reveal a dark family secret and discovers the true power that lies in maps...Synopsis to Doctor Galaxy by Jenny Schwartz: New ER doctor Alexi Sur always intended to join an aid agency. She'd just expected to work among humans. But when the Pax Galactica Corps becomes her only option (don't ask - the debts aren't hers, but the family is. Much to her regret), Alexi finds herself traveling the galaxy and learning alien physiology and culture, all while becoming a reality TV star.

Being pursued by camera drones and starring in her very own Welcome-to-the-Universe documentary was never on Alexi's to do list. She's positive the show will flop. After all, Alexi is boring. That's why her boyfriend left her for her stepsister.

But as trillions of aliens tune in to watch Alexi discover the universe in Doctor Galaxy, what she discovers is the existential threat facing humanity.

Major Soren Agha already knows about the danger. He's currently playing peacekeeper for the Eripi of the Pariah Sector whose tragic fate could be humanity's: conquered, exploited, lost.

Can one dedicated doctor save humanity? Can she, as Soren believes, also save the Eripi? And would anyone really notice if she sabotaged a couple of pesky camera drones?

Weekend reading! I'm whizzing through The Earl of Brass at the moment & then it's on to book 4 of Rachel Caine's Great Library set. It's, like, 5 yrs since I read book 3 so I hope it comes back to me!

Synopsis to The Earl of Brass by Kara Jorgensen: Eilian Sorrell is no stranger to cheating death, but when a dirigible accident costs him his arm, he fears his days of adventuring are over. As the eldest son of the Earl of Dorset, Lord Sorrell knows he will face a bleak future among London's aristocracy unless he can escape. On a quest to return to his old life, Lord Sorrell commissions a prosthetic arm, but the craftsman isn’t quite what he expected.

Fenice Brothers Prosthetics is in trouble. Hadley’s brother is dead, and she is forced to pick up the pieces and finish what he started. When clients begin turning her away, she fears she will fail until she crosses paths with the enigmatic Lord Sorrell. In exchange for a new arm, he offers her a chance at adventure in the deserts of Palestine.

Beneath the Negev’s sand lies something far more precious than potsherds or bones. A long lost crystal city has been found that could change Eilian and Hadley’s world forever, but they aren’t the only ones who know its secrets. Will they make it out alive or will they, too, be buried beneath the desert sands?

A special #WeekendReading for the date - my dissertation! An unhinged monograph written with too much coffee and not enough sleep about #sedimentary cycliciy, evaporite sequence #stratigraphy, and #environmental reconstruction of the awesomely named Triassic Mohilla Fm.

zenodo.org/records/15656179

Lateral view of a deposition sequence in an epicontinental setting under different systems tracts (after: Sarg, 2001; Catuneanu 2006). A configuration relevant to that of the Israeli Late Triassic system is chosen. The sequence of events is initiated at a sequence boundary with very low sea level, enabling accumulation of evaporite in the basin, with marginal progradation during the lowstand systems tracts (LST). As sea level rises in the transgressive systems tracts (TST) the shelf is reflooded, with marginal build-up catching up, then back stepping, resulting in restriction of the more proximal area of the shelf and accumulation of shelf evaporites. The trend shifts from backstepping to aggradation at the transition to the highstand systems tracts (HST)- carbonate deposition shifts to keep-up and expansion onto the shelf, with lateral progradation and fill of available accommodation space. As sea level begins to drop during late HST (falling stage systems tracts – FSST) the top of the sedimentary sequence becomes exposed, truncated and possibly transported into the basin, until minimal sea level is reached and the cycle reinitiates.

Weekend reading! I'm about 20 pages in on Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore. Seems like it might be a good one but it's a bit early to say! Next up will be Death on the Sound by Rhen Garland. This is book 2/3. Book 1 was very good so fingers crossed!

Synopsis to Rules for Ghosting by Shelly Jay Shore: Ezra Friedman sees ghosts, which made growing up in a funeral home a bit complicated. It might have been easier if his grandfather’s ghost didn’t give him such scathing looks of disapproval as he went through a second, HRT-induced puberty, or if he didn't have the pressure of all those relatives—living and dead—judging every choice he makes. It’s no wonder that Ezra runs as far away from the family business as humanly possible.

But when the floor of his dream job drops out from under him and his mother uses the family Passover seder to tell everyone that she’s running away with the rabbi’s wife, Ezra finds himself back in the thick of it. With his parents’ marriage imploding and the Friedman Family Memorial Chapel on the brink of financial ruin, Ezra agrees to step into his mother's shoes and help out . . . which means long days surrounded by ghosts that no one else can see.

And then there's his unfortunate crush on Jonathan, the handsome funeral home volunteer who just happens to live downstairs from Ezra's new apartment . . . and the appearance of the ghost of Jonathan's gone-too-soon husband, Ben, who is breaking every spectral rule Ezra knows.

Because Ben can speak. He can move. And as Ezra tries to keep his family together and his heart from getting broken, he quickly realizes that there's more than one way to be haunted—and more than one way to become a ghost.Synopsis to Death in the Sound by Rhen Garland: Responding to a desperate plea from an old friend, Caine, Giselle, and Thorne, accompanied by Veronique the Labrador, investigate a simple case of blackmail that leads to an unexpected and far more shocking crime.
A Psychic and illusionists are amongst the honoured guests invited to a weekend party aboard the Taniwha: a luxurious paddle steamer moored in the isolated grandeur of Milford Sound and home to reclusive millionaire philanthropist Octavius Damant, who is determined to throw his daughter a twenty-first birthday party to remember.
The birthday celebrations are cancelled, however, when a hideous murder is committed and the engines are sabotaged, trapping everyone on board with a killer willing to stop at nothing to achieve their evil schemes.
As the body count rises, Caine, Giselle, and Thorne must piece together a devilish puzzle involving extortion, desire, the reappearance of the fabulous Larkspur Diamond, and the return of a face from Thorne’s past.
Just when they feel they are beginning to unravel the case, the truth about events centuries earlier threaten to destroy everything they thought they knew about their own past lives.

Weekend reading! I'm so loving Soul Guardian by Alex Karne. Absolutely brilliant cozy fantasy. Next up will be The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen. I really enjoyed her first & I'm hoping she's done as good a job with her second.

Synopsis to Soul Guardian by Alex Karne:
Things were going great for the demon Bael-Sharoth until a little girl summoned him to open a jar of tomato sauce. Now he's trapped in the human world along with his arch nemesis the beautiful and capable Maharet Flameheart.

Life isn't easy for a demon in a small town. But at least the parks are hellhound friendly and the werewolf at the local bookshop seems nice enough.

Bael and Maharet must find a loving human family to take in this powerful young witch before time runs out or risk being stuck on earth forever.Synopsis to The Undermining of Twyla and Frank by Megan Bannen: The entire town of Eternity was shocked when widowed, middle-aged Twyla Banneker partnered up with her neighbor and best friend, Frank Ellis, to join the Tanrian Marshals. Eight years later, Twyla and Frank are still patrolling the dangerous land of Tanria, the former prison of the Old Gods.

Twyla might look like a small town mom who brings cheesy potatoes to funerals and whips up a batch of cookies for the school bake sale, but her rewarding career in law enforcement has been a welcome change from the domestic grind of mom life, despite the misgivings of her grown children.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) a recent decrease in on-the-job peril has made Twyla and Frank's job a lot safer ... and a lot less exciting. So when they discover the body of one of their fellow marshals covered in liquid glitter--and Frank finds himself the inadvertent foster dad to a baby dragon--they are more than happy to be back on the beat.

Soon, the friends wind up ensnared in a nefarious plot that goes far deeper than any lucrative Tanrian mineshaft. But as the danger closes in and Twyla and Frank's investigation becomes more complicated, so does their easy friendship. And Twyla starts to realize that her true soul mate might just be the person who has lived next door all along...

Weekend reading! Really enjoying the rather silly There's Something Wrong with the Cats by CJ Powell. A very British cat lover's sci fi. Next up is TJ Klune. I loved The Cerulean Sea & have high hopes for book 2

Synopsis to There's Something Wrong with the Cats by CJ Powell: Curiosity didn’t kill the cat, it mutated it into a vigilante crime fighter.

Dan's cats are acting weird. One has grown into a strength powerhouse, the other wants to communicate... verbally. And now other kitties have begun to go missing from his quiet suburban street. Could the man in the parka that haunts a nearby industrial estate have answers? Or perhaps it’s something to do with the strange disappearing woman in the woods? Can our hero figure out the conspiracy before it turns into a catastrophe?Synopsis to Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune: A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one.

He’s the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there’s the island’s sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Weekend reading! Halfway through The Saint Florentin Murders by Jean-François Parot & it's very good, as all his books have been. Also currently reading Genteel Spirits by Alice Duncan, an ok series about an LA fake medium in the 1920s.

Synopsis to The Saint Florentin Murders by Jean-François Parot: These are difficult times for Le Floch: Louis XV is dead and Sartine has been promoted to Minister of State for the Navy.

#WeekendReading: Clara Blättler on the strengths and limitations of reconstructing #seawater major-ion reconstructions through the #Phanerozoic from fluid inclusions in #salt.

Link: sciencedirect.com/science/arti

Phanerozoic seawater reconstructions using the HL method (Brennan et al., 2013) (with an exception for Carboniferous evaporite units where a different potassium concentration was used, following Holt et al. (2014)); size of circles indicates number of individual fluid inclusion analyses used in the formation- or basin-wide average. A) Molar Mg/Ca ratios. Horizontal dashed line marks the approximate threshold between a switch in mineralogy of inorganic marine carbonate precipitates (aragonite and high-Mg calcite favored at Mg/Ca
 2; low-Mg calcite favored at Mg/Ca
2; Stanley and Hardie (1998)). B) Calcium and sulfate concentrations, with error bars indicating range permitted by varying the ion product of calcium
sulfate from 150 to 450 mmolal2. C) Magnesium concentrations (note differences compared to Mg/Ca trend in panel A). D) Sodium concentrations, driven by the charge balance requirement of the HL method.
