... A neat script which installs #winehq, #winlink and the vara modems ! The project is called #Winelink and is available on github.
This works great ! Only some final tweaking is needed to configure com ports and sound card.
#VarAC is damn easy to install as a next steps.

As my other #EmCom software is #FLDigi, I now have my full setup up and running on Linux 👍

Then I found the windows implementation of #direwolf not satisfying as it doesn't work with #Hamlib, which forced me to use the DTR signal from one of my rig's virtual com port. Only the Linux implementation works with Hamlib.
So I had to switch to Linux and consider moving #Winlink as well which is developed only for windows. I tried some manual install in the past but didn't succeed.

But this time, I found ...

New ham experiences this past week !

I had to get #Winlink work with packet radio. Si I discovered #direwolf which is a software TNC.
It happened not to work though i heard well the audio from thé remote station answering my calls.
After a full reset of my rig, I discovered this ils the noise reduction that needed to ne disabled.
I also did some tests through audio repeaters, worked fine with one, not with two.
Next step will ne to work with another EmCom team to see how we can connect.

I recently acquired a used Kenwood TH-D75A. #APRS reception and decode on this radio is way, way better than on my Yaesu FT-5DR. I expected this based on my past comparisons between Yaesu and Kenwood APRS capable radios. The difference is night and day.

I really do believe that the Kenwood APRS HTs have always been the best in terms of performance and features. And they have real, externally accessible TNCs, which is great for packet and #Winlink!

The Kenwood radios really are nice, but $$$

Someone checked into the #FediFridayWinlinkNet this week, which I applaud. We haven't activated the net for months now, but this steadfast #hamradio operator sent a check-in anyway. Kudos to them.

I wonder if we should try to restart #FFWN? What do folks think? I may be able to do it.

My first Winlink Wednesday Check-In #winlink #hamradio

New #HamRadio mini-sidequest. #TARC accepts checkins via #winlink for their Tuesday evening net. They never said I couldn't use #APRS, they just said "we prefer you use RF."

For maximum controversy I will now attempt to check in to the net using APRS from my HT. Hoping WNLK-1 has generous timeouts cause this is going to be fiddly.

First successful connection to my Winlink Gateway in VARA FM mode, using Linux Mint, after some investigation on how to use the same COM port in AX25 and VARA FM. #winlink #hamradio

Architecturally, what prevents Winlink Express and the thee different VARAs: VARA FM, VARA HF, and VARA SAT from being open sourced and ported to Linux, the BSD's, etc.

Are there any other closed source protocols in common use in ham radio?

I have an ancient #Thinkpad that just is not taking to #Gentoo well. I could probably coax it to work eventually, but I don't want to bug the Gentoo IRC channel too much. I can't get X or Wayland running. I tried an #Arch derivative which "works" but is very buggy.

I don't want #Ubuntu with it's crappy snap everywhere setup. I might fall back to #Slackware or #Debian

I just want something that has most #hamradio software in its repos and can run #Wine for #Winlink support.
