Winter bike finally ready. Originally thought I could make the original mechanical disc brakes work by replacing the cables. They were however too corroded to be saved.

When I put the rear wheel back on, the derailleur hanger snapped, it was severely corroded as well. That is the most annoying thing to break on a bike since there are so many variations. At one point I thought that was the end of the bike and then I found a shop with the right on in stock.

Oh, I was unable to get the part of the hanger mounted to the derailleur off so I had to replace that as well.

When putting the chain back on I realised that the crank wasn’t spinning freely. Scratch that, I would probably spend 50W-75W just to turn that.

Now, my Orbea Carpe that started its life with a 1x7 drivetrain has a full Shimano Cues 1x11 speed drivetrain and good hydraulic brakes.

Back to commuting by bike again.

Das wichtigste beim Fahrradpendeln im Winter sind gute Klamotten. Meine Regenhose zum Beispiel hat die hervorragende Eigenschaft das aufgenommene Wasser zu beinahe 100% an die darunterliegende Stoffschicht abzugeben. So bleibt sie selbst schön trocken.

This was the one which really shook me though. This is a bus gate, and has clearly had a lot fewer vehicles through. The ruts are frozen solid, and what I didn't realise until I was already on it is that the black bits between the ruts are not the road surface, but solid ice. I may have sworn a bit as I skidded a little, but made it through upright. It was scary enough *walking* over it today.

I didn't take any photos on the main roads. Where these are just roads generally they're completely clear. Where they have bike lanes generally the road is clear but the bike lane is only intermittently clear, and we tend to cycle just outside it, so as not to have to pull in and out repeatedly or encounter unexpected icy patches. This is not popular with some drivers. Close passes are normal. Occasionally people beep their horns. #winterCommute #cycling

So, this morning I walked the bits of route between school and the next main road which yesterday I cycled. And as I walked I took a few pictures to demonstrate. Lets start before that though, with our street.

This is a typical residential street in Cambridge (or just outside) 4 days after it snowed, when the temperature hasn't got above freezing for more than half an hour.

Decided to get the bus tomorrow due to poor gritting, plus the –4C temp drop means potential black icy roads. I’m pretty sure my Brompton’s wee tyres will be fine on most roads, but a few cycle paths on some roads near the kerb aren’t gritted and are mostly full of leftover snow that is now just rock solid due to the freezing conditions.
I’m also apprehensive with the rush morning drivers. I already don’t trust them on a normal commute let alone an icy one. 🥶❄️🧊 #wintercycling #wintercommute
