#WorktoRule

2025-05-01

I can tell you what happens if only a few do it: they get harassed by their admin, possibly even fired (if they haven't yet achieved tenure).

I can also tell you what happens if everyone does it, because I have seen this, too. It's called Working To Rule. It's a classic and effective type of job action that is similar to a strike, but allows you to still collect paychecks. When we did it, admin buckled within a week. Much harder to pick off and punish individuals when the entire staff maintains solidarity.

A tweet: “the entire education system is built on unpaid teacher overtime."

Nicholas Ferroni @ @NicholasFerroni writes: I can't even imagine what would happen if teachers and school staffs only worked their contractual hours, only fulfilled their contractual duties and only used the resources their schools provided.

Malicious Compliance & Work to Rule: 2 easy & legal forms of sabotage to fuck with the boss:

The Durango Worker writes: "Malicious compliance (also known as malicious obedience) is the behavior of intentionally inflicting harm by strictly following the orders of a superior while knowing or intending that compliance with the orders will have an unintended or negative result. The term usually implies the following of an order in such a way that ignores or otherwise undermines the order's intent but follows it to the letter."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maliciou

"Work-to-rule is a job action in which employees do no more than the minimum required by the rules of their contract, and precisely follow all safety or other regulations, which may cause a slowdown or decrease in productivity, as they are no longer working during breaks or during unpaid extended hours and weekends (checking email, for instance). Such an action is considered less disruptive than a strike or lockout, and obeying the rules is less susceptible to disciplinary action. Notable examples have included nurses refusing to answer telephones, teachers refusing to work for free at night and during weekends and holidays, and police officers refusing to issue citations. Refusal to work overtime, travel on duty, or sign up to other tasks requiring employee assent are other manifestations of using work-to-rule as industrial action.

1st panel: scrawny manager tells burly worker in blue apron: when a customer asks you where something is, you drop what you're doing and walk them to it!

2nd panel: manager yells at worker: corporate is cracking down on this! Don't get written up!

3rd panel: older man asks worker: Hey, do you know where the post office is?

4th panel: manager asks: Where did Berle disappear to? Secretary replies: Into the world of malicious compliance.

@andyb I bloody love a #WorkToRule.

Leave plenty of time for the appreciation phase - don't feel rushed. Savour it like a great w̶i̶n̶e̶ fart

@evilotto @Npars01 @GottaLaff under-withholding to deny the federal government an interest free loan (that getting a refund actually is) is probably a good start.

It's also in people's self interest since given the layoffs and the DOGE shenanigans can people be sure they will get a return in a timely manner?

So a #WorkToRule / slowdown, to continue the strike analogy rather than a full strike

This is also cumulative ammunition to push for effective #RightToDisconnect law @MontgomeryGator

Oh, it's too disruptive to monitor job communications outside our contracted working hours? Yeah I guess you're right, boss. Hey look here's a law that would help, I guess you'd support this then boss

Rich dude with gray mutton chops and top hat, crying with laughter. Reads: Capitalism. Your job is to make a profit for investors who don't care about you. You don't get to keep any of the profit, and you can be fired at will. Don't take it personally.

It's #WorkYourProperHoursDay today.

“We’re encouraging every worker to take their lunchbreak and finish on time today, and we know that the best employers will support them doing that.
Most workers don’t mind putting in extra hours from time to time, but they should be paid for it"
TUC general secretary Paul Nowak

Hear, hear. We used to call it working to rule. In the last century, it was often more effective than strikes.

workers in agreed to “” to protest understaffing and a do-nothing abusive manager.
They followed every picky rule about how to brew coffee to order, how long to heat each pastry, and how thoroughly and how often to wipe down tables and the counter. They watched as every 5th customer walked out in frustration. The lazy manager was suddenly forced to actually do some work.
The result after one week was more workers to cover shifts.
