The alt & tenor sax are wonderful instruments to play. The way they feel in your hands (esp the tenor) is something you can't describe. Even if you can (not) play one note, get to hold a saxophone and feel how awsome amazing and powerful it feels

You will cherish that moment for life

My Romance - Sadao Plays Ballads by Sadao Watanabe, released on Takt in Japan in 1967.

Haunting early work from Japanese reed legend Sadao Watanabe -- an artist who makes the record way more than just a set of familiar ballads! True, the set's a bit more mellow than some of Watanabe's other work of the time -- but his work on alto and flute really have this subtle sort of edge -- a melancholy quality that's different than the way that American players of the period might have hit the music -- and which shows just how much Watanabe and a few key players were transforming the style of the Japanese scene! Tracks are short, and the format is simple -- but the record's got an understated elegance that's every bit the best side of Sadao in his early years. . - Dusty Groove

Ended the first weekend of the year and welcomed the working week after my swim with Desmond Blue an album recorded by American jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond released in 1962 and was his first LP for RCA Victor..
Allmusic awarded the album 4 stars stating "The tone of the album: lush, reflective, thought-provoking, and soul-stirring. This work is quite a plus for any listener and especially those who consider themselves avid fans of Paul Desmond" = Wikipedia

Desmond Blue is an album recorded by American jazz saxophonist Paul Desmond released in 1962 and was his first LP for RCA Victor. The album was produced by George Avakian, who had worked with Desmond at Columbia Records (when Desmond was recorded as part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet). Avakian left Columbia in 1958 to join the brand new Warner Bros. Records, where he produced Desmond's previous album, First Place Again. Joining RCA Victor in 1960, Avakian once again recruited Desmond to his label, and he produced all six of the albums Desmond recorded for RCA Victor as a leader. Desmond Blue was also the first Desmond solo album to feature the saxophonist in an orchestral setting. RCA reissued the album in 1978 as Paul Desmond - Pure Gold Jazz (ANL1-2807). Desmond returned to the orchestral format later in the decade, when he signed with CTI Records and recorded Summertime.

Ended the week and started the first weekend of the year after a ride on which I saw my first kingfisher of the year with Tranquility an album by American jazz saxophonist Lee Konitz's Quartet recorded in 1957 and released on the Verve label

Jason Ankeny of Allmusic states "crafted with startling precision and economy, Tranquility extols the virtues of mood and shape with Talmudic zeal, towering astride thought and expression. ...Rarely is music so profoundly cerebral also so deeply heartfelt" - Wikipedia

Musical Interlude: And now something to carry us all away....Earl Bostic had a short life but his skill with the sax has rarely been equaled. He straddled the line between R&B and jazz, creating a unique sound. Here he is in a track from 1958, back when pop culture was space-crazy after the launch of Sputnik in '57.

Time Zones is an album by electronic musician Richard Teitelbaum and saxophonist Anthony Braxton, recorded in 1976 and released on the Freedom label.

..In JazzTimes, Bill Shoemaker wrote: "Teitelbaum is in a class by himself when it comes to improvising with synthesizers. His ability to morph from horn-like voice to viscous texture, to melt between foreground and background, and to incite inspired improvisations from Braxton (especially an alto solo at the end of 'Crossings', which unravels from desultory lyricism to an eerie reed effect), is thoroughly engaging". - Wikipedia

The King is an album by saxophonist/composer Benny Carter recorded in 1976 and released by the Pablo label.

AllMusic reviewer Scott Yanow stated "The great Benny Carter was so much in demand as an arranger/composer in the studios that for 15 years, starting in the early '60s, he rarely recorded or performed in jazz settings, instead choosing to concentrate on writing movie scores. ... As The King (his first small-group session since 1966) proves, the masterful altoist had not lost a thing through the years. ... Benny Carter is in masterful form, stretching out on eight of his own compositions and showing that his name always has to be ranked near the top of jazz improvisers, whether one is considering the 1930s or the 1990s" - Wikipedia

Science Fiction is an album by the American avant-garde jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, recorded in September and October 1971 and released on Columbia Records in February 1972.

Reviewing the album for Pitchfork, Daniel Felsenthal called it "a one-of-a-kind dispatch from the vibrant, polygenic, and contested lofts of downtown New York" and "a welcome return to the singable, quintessentially Southern melodicism that counterbalanced [Coleman's] dauntless early oeuvre" - Wikipedia

Only the Blues is a 1957 album by Sonny Stitt, accompanied by Roy Eldridge and Oscar Peterson.

Drew Fields wrote for Allmusic:

While the material is basically set up to let Stitt and Roy Eldridge trade off improvisations, when it is these two the result is energetic and totally worthwhile. Eldridge adds a great deal to the date, taking the music back (in feeling) a little bit to an earlier era. He also seems to push Stitt to keep his game at a high level, which he sometimes needed. Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown are their usual first-rate selves.

Ended Monday and started Tuesday after a swim with I'll Take Romance is an album by saxophonist Bud Shank released on the World Pacific label.

In an AllMusic review by Jason Ankeney, he states: "Far removed from the sometimes bloodless sensibilities of the West Coast cool school, I'll Take Romance is as warm as its title portends. The string arrangements are sweet but never sentimental, boasting a sensitivity that colors but never overwhelms Shank's lyrical alto and flute" - Wikipedia
