Well, not really beautiful, but here we go:

Doing some (imprecise but internally coherent) georeferencing of plans from Tell Chuera. There is a strange lack of a nice and precise general plan for recent excavations at Chuera (which are extremely well documented otherwise), but the plans of the old digs are giving a good compensation.

Making a few graphs with R (with data prepared on Postgres). Not always as straightforward as it could, but pretty satisfying when it works:

#r #rstudio #postgresql #archaeodon #ancientneareast #ancientsouthwestasia

R barplot graph of archaeological ceramics found in 3 regions, by century (from 4800 to 1300 BC).

The objects with dates larger than a century have been "splitted", so that we sometimes have values between 0 and 1.

Log scale so that we can compare the evolution of the part of the corpus that was studied directly in museums (in red) to the total corpus (in blue).

Adams 1981 ("Heartland of cities", p. 53) and the beginning of spatial analysis and discussion of its limitations in ANE archaeology :

#ancientneareast #archaeodon #ancientsouthwestasia #gischat

"Again, the use of Thyssen polygon techniques to generate bounded spatial units suggestive of ancient territorial patterning is also compromised, since the unsuspected omission of a larger center (or its conversion to a settlement of significantly lower rank) can produce a quite spurious outcome. Similarly, nearestneighbor analysis, potentially useful in providing coefficients of relative settlement clustering from measurements of distances between sites, is of doubtful validity when the proportion of sites from which such measurements can be taken varies uncontrollably."

Let’s give a bit of context about this map : freeradical.zone/@amaury_h/110

Some temples built during the second half of Early Dynastic Period (2600-2300 BC) in Mesopotamia have an outside wall with an oval shape. The most up-to-date academic reference can be found here (*), I will just discuss it later.

Oval temples (and suspected oval temples) of Southern Mesopotamia (mainly 3rd millenium).

#archeodon #archaeodons #ancientneareast #ancientSouthWestAsia #ane

Map of "sumero-akkadian" archaeological sites where a temple with an oval enclosure wall is attested or suspected : Khafajeh, al-Hiba, Obeid are certain and dated to mid-third millenium BC, Dlehim is certain but possibly more recent (Ur III period), Larsa and Girsu are speculative.

Pleiades Literature Club: Call for Participation

pleiades.stoa.org/news/blog/pl

Pleiades is hungry for new bibliographic references. Let's build a community effort to monitor scholarly publications for work that can enhance, correct, and expand the gazetteer in the history, archaeology, linguistics, and mythology of spaces and places in the ancient world.

Boosts appreciated.

Quick & dirty superposition of diverse plans from the Sin temple of #Khafajeh (#Iraq).

Plans put online by the DiyArDA project : diyalaproject.uchicago.edu/ord

Superposition of Sin I (before 3000 BC) and Sin X (around 2300 BC) temples from Khafajeh, Iraq. The temple has been hugely enlarged over time.Superposition of Sin V (around 2900 BC) and Sin VI (around 2800 BC) temples from Khafajeh, Iraq. The oldest plan is put over the more recent one. The building of Sin VI is the most significant change in the plan of the temple, which has been expanded by suppressing a street at the north, and building larger walls around it.

Well that escalated quickly !

(environmental evidence is discussed in another article of the same proceedings)

#ancientSouthWestAsia #ancientneareast #archeodon #SouthernLevant #ghassulian #potterytechnology

At Fazael 2 (Stratum 2), a late LC site, a significant number of ceramics present a very compact clay paste with no visible fine porosity and an almost melted-like appearance, being hard to break, as if overfired.

Preliminary analyses suggest that these clay pastes might reflect meteorological episodes, which would have severely affected the Ghassulian people, causing their dispersal and the collapse of their symbolic universe, negated by its lack of effectiveness in protecting them.

@telliott You're right, ANE is a bit problematic. As @ArchaeoBasti said, #ancientWestAsia, #ancientSouthWestAsia might be best solution maybe? even without the ancient, depending on the context.
