@archaeoriddle Please, you still have a few days do fill our survey! if everyone have heard (even slightly remotely) about the project could answer that would be amazing and super helpful! don't hesitate to share the link.

If you are around Cambridge next week don't forget to come by! we're hosting a super nice symposium to discuss and compare the arrival of farming in Japan & the British Islands (and you can also register online: cam-ac-uk.zoom.us/meeting/regi). This is also the occasion to wrap up what have been done within the ENCOUNTER project, for which I've been working on for the last 3 years.

2024-06-25

But before sharing the survey, we want to thank all those who participated to the workshops, our sponsors (the British Academy, @ucamarchaeology , MSCA pos) and above all, everyone who helped with the development of the project 🙏🎉 thank you all so much! 🫶💕 #archaeoriddle #archaeodon #histodon #rstat #modelling #simulation #floss #ArchaeoFOSS

While we wrap up and get everything ready, we’ll invite all those of you who have been interested in the project to answer a quick survey but before that, we know we owe you one final video! the only one, the final battle 🔥 ⚔️... and this is all coming very soon! ⏳ #histodon #Archaeoriddle #rstat #simulation #modeling #archaeodon #ArchaeoFOSS

In 1924, a french doctor created fake archaeological artefacts, including tablets with an invented script. They were used to claim the appearance of writing in the middle of France during the late paleolithic.
The persistance of controversies led to archaeological excavations in the village of Glozel in the 1980's, discussed in this radio show : radiofrance.fr/franceculture/p

Doing some (imprecise but internally coherent) georeferencing of plans from Tell Chuera. There is a strange lack of a nice and precise general plan for recent excavations at Chuera (which are extremely well documented otherwise), but the plans of the old digs are giving a good compensation.

Interface of QGIS with several layers of archaeological plans from Tell Chuera excavation. Superposition of a recent plan of the sacred area on a 1988 topographic plan.

When you're not totally sure about what is truly inside your graph:

#ancientneareast #archaeodon #ggplot2

Log10 graph. On the y axis: sum of the max distance between ceramics of the same type, each divided by the duration of the type. On the x axis : chronological points every 50 years (based on types beginning and end dates).

Making a few graphs with R (with data prepared on Postgres). Not always as straightforward as it could, but pretty satisfying when it works:

#r #rstudio #postgresql #archaeodon #ancientneareast #ancientsouthwestasia

R barplot graph of archaeological ceramics found in 3 regions, by century (from 4800 to 1300 BC).

The objects with dates larger than a century have been "splitted", so that we sometimes have values between 0 and 1.

Log scale so that we can compare the evolution of the part of the corpus that was studied directly in museums (in red) to the total corpus (in blue).

Adams 1981 ("Heartland of cities", p. 53) and the beginning of spatial analysis and discussion of its limitations in ANE archaeology :

#ancientneareast #archaeodon #ancientsouthwestasia #gischat

"Again, the use of Thyssen polygon techniques to generate bounded spatial units suggestive of ancient territorial patterning is also compromised, since the unsuspected omission of a larger center (or its conversion to a settlement of significantly lower rank) can produce a quite spurious outcome. Similarly, nearestneighbor analysis, potentially useful in providing coefficients of relative settlement clustering from measurements of distances between sites, is of doubtful validity when the proportion of sites from which such measurements can be taken varies uncontrollably."
