You never know what you’ll discover at Bismarck Antique Mall, like this extra-funky music box that came home with me yesterday. It has a normal music box mechanism and handcrank key, but I added some Suzi Quatro to morebetterize things. #musicbox #antiques #vintage #music #antiquestore #rock #rockandroll #rockmusic

Discovering this store was such a present surprise, as there are so many interesting #antiques there. After enjoying it for a good while, I ended up buying just a small #book, mostly because I have no extra space in my suitcase.

But, I did something else.

There are many sings inside inviting customers to follow them on #Twitter and I had to tell them about #Bluesky and #Mastodon and the descentralized social media movement. They really enjoyed my explanation and I told me they would try it.

We went to an antique store in Lawrence, MA today. I was looking for camera gear and not expecting to find anything.

I was right that there wasn’t much to see, but I did see one that has me super intrigued.

$79 seems way too much for this, but I am going to spend some time on the YouTube doing some research and maybe I might go back again. Folding cameras from pre-war are sort of what I was thinking of for my first step into the medium format world.

We’ll see.

Get Started Using Vintage Lenses with These Five Tips

The world of vintage lenses can provide a whole new experience to photographers but not everyone knows how to get started. To help others explore the unique characteristics of these decades-old lenses, a filmmaker has shared his best tips.

Mark Holtze is a cinematographer and content creator who has vast experience in working with "dusty old lenses" and adapting them to suit modern applications. Vintage lenses can bring a different look to both stills and video footage, and a lot of times they are sold for a fraction of modern-day lens prices.

Holtze says the first and most important step is to simply to do research before jumping into any purchases. Many photographers will be tempted to go for more well-known brands or pay a higher price tag for them, but there are many lens brands that can be just as good.

A post shared by Mark Holtze (@mark.holtze)

Before browsing eBay listings, attending a vintage lens fair or an antique market that could have hidden photographic gear gems, research can help in setting more realistic expectations for the current price market and what to look out for.

Once the buyer has found a suitable lens, Holtze recommends spending some time to learn to read the markings on the lens and to understand the mechanics of handling it. Compared to modern-day lenses, the older ones will often lack autofocus but will have solid features that can enhance the shooting experience but might require some time getting used to.

As an experienced user of vintage lenses, Holtze knows the importance of testing the lens in various shooting scenarios. This allows the user to learn where the lens excels and where it may lack, which can avoid further disappointment.

This ties in with Holtze's next tip: practice. The more the shooter practices with their new lens, the more they will grow to understand the optics, the mechanics, and any quirks that the lens might possess. He recommends not to give up after the first few shots -- which may be disappointing as there can be a learning curve -- because the more time is invested, the better results the experience will yield.

Last but not least, Holtze concludes his video with a tip to simply dive into creating art. Vintage lenses were never designed with modern-day cameras in mind, which is why any limitations that this shooting experience brings, can contribute to unexpected results and can help push boundaries that help photographers and filmmakers discover new creative ideas.

More of Holtze's educational videos can be found on his YouTube channel and his work can be viewed on his Instagram.

Burned, Inoperable Leica M4 Sold at Auction for Over $2,000

Flints Auctions

A fire-damaged Leica M4 rangefinder camera with a Summicron 50mm lens has been sold for £1,488 ($2,070) at an auction in the United Kingdom, showing that even inoperable Leica cameras somehow hold value.

As described by the U.K. auction house Flints, the "chargrilled" Leica M4 -- which comes with Leitz Summicron f/2 50mm lens -- has been damaged by fire. Dated in 1968, the ashen camera is described as a collectible piece since the first-ever M4 was released just two years prior in 1966. That said, the fire damage makes it more of a statement art piece rather than a usable piece of equipment, even if the lens was swapped for one in working condition.

The camera sold for £1,200 ($1,670) at an auction on Thursday, 29 April 2021. The added premiums and taxes increased the final price to £1,488 ($2,070).

The auction house has not shared any details on how this antique camera ended up in this condition, however, Kosmo Foto quotes that photographer Jonathan Bloom -- once the owner of the camera -- told the Facebook group Vintage Camera Collectors that the 1968 camera had been damaged in a house fire.

I owned this actual camera. years ago. Bought it at a camera show. Sold it to a collector. Wound up in an auction. Now it’s here. so random. FYI; I paid $900 for it at the time. Maybe too much. Maybe too little. I thought of it as pared down to the basics of design. An object, perfect in its form. Stripped of its utility but perfect in its design. That is what’s cool about this. Anyone who bemoans the broken camera is full of s–t.

Flints Auctions

Buying and selling damaged photography gear is nothing new as spare parts are always in demand, but it is rarer to find cameras and lenses that have sustained as much damage as this particular example and still have any value.

A similar unique story was reported by PetaPixel in 2018 where two heavily moldy Hasselblad 500c cameras with 80mm planar lenses and film backs were auctioned on eBay.

Although the speed focus handle was in working condition, the seller cautioned buyers: "people with mold allergies should NOT bid on this item." At the time of publishing the article in 2018, the bidding for this damaged Hasselblad had increased up to nearly $400, well short of the burned Leica's value.

It is not known what buyers do with their damaged antiques but a user on the Leica forum, by the username of 250swb, calls the burned Leica M4 a "very, very expensive ornament."
