In a burst of end-of-times franticness yesterday I filled out forms online to get a learner's permit so as to go through the formality of renewing a license which expired years ago (I haven't owned a car since last century); however, upon discovering one must wait six months to take a license exam following receipt of a permit, I thought to myself, "Pfft, fahhhk that—six months from now I'll be out of the country / clandestinely underground resisting / in an internment camp; why waist the money, time, and the risk of catching COVID waiting in line at the RMV for that shit?"

Some philosophers have claimed that there is no distinctive psychological feature that lies behind evil actions. Instead, they claim that evil actions can come from all kinds of motives. This fits with #HannahArendt’s analysis of the trial of Adolf Eichmann and her claims about the banality of evil.

1. We are morally obligated to prevent bad things from happening to other people.
2. Hunger disease and suffering are very bad things.
3. Our luxuries are not meaningful.
4. Through #charity we can prevent bad things from happening.
Another way to say this is that ordinary people are #evil.
Leo Hurwitz, 1909-1991, pioneered #documentary #filmmaking and won the Peabody award for his film production during the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. He was later blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

i fried cheese and mushrooms in candlelight, possibly diluting the idea since i had lights on then, in a way. quite tricky to see whether the amount of pepper was sufficient. #banality #earthhour

The issue of evil seems to be even more complex. It was not the simple "banality of evil" but something far more dangerous.
People identified and embraced evil, antisemitism, the ideologies of racial supremacy.
The warning of Auschwitz can be used to protect people from this temptation, but in fact education may not be enough.
