Why rejoice in the misfortune of others

One way to feel my social status improving is if someone else lowers theirs. And so, when I see someone mess up in ways that cause them to lose face, and thus lose social status, I can feel a burst of satisfaction as my own status is raised, at no cost to me.

Max und Moritz (1865) tells the story of two insufferable, mischievous brats who enjoy terrorising those around them and the village elders. Absolutely opposed to order, they know no respect. But unfortunately for them, and fortunately for those close to them, society takes its revenge in the end, as they are both punished for their misdeeds by ending up as goose feed after being crushed by the wheels of a mill and spat out by a disgorger.

Autism is an illegible feature

"How disabling it is depends as much on your social circumstances as it does on your symptoms."
"It turns out that, actually, most people are uncomfortable around social difference and get considerably less comfortable when you point it out."

A quotation from Josh Billings

Mankind ain’t apt tew respekt verry mutch what they are familiar with, it iz what we don’t know, or kant see, that we hanker for.

A quotation from Nassim Nicholas Taleb

I don’t particularly care about the usual. If you want to get an idea of a friend’s temperament, ethics, and personal elegance, you need to look at him under the tests of severe circumstances, not under the regular rosy glow of daily life. Can you assess the danger a criminal poses by examining only what he does on an ordinary day? Can we understand health without considering wild diseases and epidemics? Indeed the normal is often irrelevant.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist

A quotation from Ellis Peters

The step from perfectly ordinary things into the miraculous seems to me so small, almost accidental, that I wonder why it astonishes you at all, or why you trouble to reason about it. If it were reasonable it could not be miraculous, could it?

A quotation from Douglas Adams

I’ve come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.

2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.

3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

The Salmon of Doubt (2002)

A quotation from Nicolas Chamfort

Men’s ideas are like card-playing or any other game. Ideas which in the past I’ve seen considered reckless have since become commonplace, almost trivial, and adopted by men unworthy of sharing them. Ideas which now seem extraordinary will be regarded feeble and perfectly ordinary by our descendants.

Nicolas Chamfort (1741-1794) French writer, epigrammist (b. Nicolas-Sébastien Roch)
Products of Perfected Civilization [Produits de la Civilisation Perfectionée], Part 1 “Maxims and Thoughts [Maximes et Pensées],” ch. 2, ¶ 145 (1795) [tr. Parmée (2003), ¶ 115]

Today’s #coffee pick: decaf Starbucks brand House blend, said to have cocoa and toffee notes. This one was hiding in my stash, unopened and pristine like it was all that. So I plugged in my #espresso machine and brewed myself a cuppa #normalcy. (Highly recommended.) Lovely smell while brewing. Packed with ice, flavored with a splash of English toffee syrup, and topped off with caramel vanilla and hazelnut creamer. Hello, darkness, my old friend. Delish!

#Normalcy is dead.
Yet we have yet to bury it.
Climate would've killed it—if #covid hadn't.

Yet normalcy is dead.
Yet we have yet to bury it.
We only got so many #spoons.

We can bury ourselves or bury the dead.
We only got so many spoons.

Use them wisely.

🇺🇸 Good Morning #America 🥥🌴 ! How long before the #Trump Titanic starts sinking & the #traitors start jumping off? Or will the #lindseygraham, #TedCruz , #MarcoRubio, etc go down with the ship? Does TRump really think bringing on #brainworm #jfkjr is going to save him?

#Kamala finally called him out. He is a small, petty, coward who hides behind others while lobbing insults & whining like the little #manchild he is. I wish they'd bring back those orange, baby balloons. 👶

Time to get to work America. #Republicans and #Independents. Please join us in voting 🗳 for #democracy, #decency and #normalcy. Disagree about how to get things done. But during Trump's 1st term he was the #dividerandcheif Children and babies stripped from their parents arms. People in cages. He did nothing about Health Care, nothing about Infrastructure, nothing to enrich the lives of everyday Americans. He spent the time enriching himself & his family. Giving tax cuts to billionaires. He watched & did nothing as thousands died #COVID19

"In the 2nd half of the 20th century, there was a short time when Western governments and cultures pretended they were against genocide: one in particular, the Holocaust. But before that, they had been for it."

Thank you for the link @RFancio
I even understand that prof. Julia Steinberger asks us to consider perpetrators as normal.
It reminds me of "the banality of evil" from Hannah #Arendt:

Adolf Eichmann ‘never realised what he was doing’ due to an ‘inability… to think from the standpoint of somebody else’. (From her 1963 book.)

Arendt found Eichmann an ordinary, rather bland, bureaucrat, who in her words, was ‘neither perverted nor sadistic’, but ‘terrifyingly normal’.
