While packing-up at dusk (several more layers on me), I noticed the bee was still sitting on the plant. Earlier, watched it make a few efforts to fly then sit back down again. Too cold / not enough food?

...put the leaf it was on, with some sugar-syrup in a bottle-top, down a deep burned-tree root pit and re-covered hole with stone slab. Next morning, bee totally dopey but perked up in sun and gone when I got back. Hopefully to its own nest in the ground. Not seen [or heard!] since.

@Wen I've got about 50 linear metres of #broadbean as a winter crop here, both for #SoilImprover and crop. The ones on better soil are flowering, and yes, yesterday I saw - and heard!! - a very loud white tail #bumblebee feeding among them - #Portugal, but still a rainy 4.5 deg C last night. Rain usually means warmer, so we'll see what that does for them both.

[edit] this is double delightful for me, because last August most of the land was scorched, if not actually burned by a wildfire that scarred about a third of the width of the country, and birds and beneficial insects have been scarce since.

Some good news for the shortest day

The #bumblebee population has risen dramatically in central #Scotland after the #rewilding of former farmland. Only 35 bumblebees were recorded on Denmarkfield — a 90-acre site north of #Perth — when the charity Rewilding Denmarkfield began its work in 2021. By 2023 this had increased to 4,056. The soil and barley stubble was naturally colonised by 85 different plant species, attracting the pollinators.
