Concrete Blonde were one of the legions of bands to emerge from the LA underground in the 80s, the scene covered everything from Mötley Crüe to Fishbone to Jane’s Addiction to X to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  What a time to be alive.  They first found some recognition in 1986, with their eponymous

At some point in 1982 in Vancouver, it was nigh on impossible not to hear ‘Down Under’ by Men at Work.  At that point, they were an obscure band from Australia, literally the other end of the world from Vanco

Early in the new millennium, Montréal’s music scene was really exciting. Then, Montréal was beginning its recovery from what felt like 40 years of constitutional struggles and the threat of Québec’s separation from Canada.  The head offices were long gone, and th

Chum reminded me that on this day, March 2nd, back in 1959, Miles Davis and Co started their first recording session for what would become Kind of Blue. One of my all-time favourite jazz albums, hell, one of my all-time favourite albums of any type.

Among the other musicians involved were the equally legendary John Coltrane and the brilliant Bill Evans. Blue gold...

‘Commercial Rain’ might be one of the greatest songs ever written.  Honestly, I don’t say that lightly.  It’s not a very complex song, but somehow the music and lyrics come together.  Inspiral C

The Judgement Night soundtrack has far outlived its film, which was a largely forgettable action flick starring Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Denis Leary.  Something about a group of friends running afoul of a drug dealer and hilarity ensues.  I saw the film in the theatres

This album was one of the anthems of my teens. The haunting violin and raw folksy energy hooked me.
30 years later the darkness in the lyrics bite and almost overwhelm the joy of the music. Almost but not quite, this is still a fantastic album.
