VERY OT: Client Resource -- CallCentric -- $1 Per Month for Voicemail Drop

This message might be useful to anyone in the USA losing land-line phone
service (POTS) due to fiber upgrades. I'm posting it to a psychology
list because therapists might need to know this as a resource for
elderly family members and clients.

problem:

Verizon has just sent out letters to elderly residents at Mercy Ridge in
Timonium, MD (and other retirement communities?) saying that they are
retiring their copper phone line network, the communities won't let them
install fiber optic lines, so they are SHUTTING DOWN the landlines. In
the case of Mercy Ridge Retirement Community they are shutting down land
lines between October 6th and October 22nd.

*This could happen at any property where the landlord won't grant access
to have fiber optic lines installed.

This is going to be an issue for many mostly older folks who have had
their phone numbers for decades.

Below is an inexpensive option for all of these folks to consider.
Please forward to anyone likely to lose their land lines and/or
switching to cell phone but wants to also have access to their old phone
numbers to maintain contact with old friends and family who call
sporadically.

For $1 per month, you can have a voicemail box which people can call to
leave messages.

CallCentric ( https://www.calcentric.com ) has several service plans
that let you keep your old Verizon number. I have been using this
company for years.

To port your old number:
1) Go to the homepage at https://www.callcentric.com and look for the
box in the middle of the page that says "WANT TO KEEP YOUR NUMBER?".
Enter your number.

2) You will be asked to create an account.

PLANS: You buy inbound (people call you) and outbound (you call people)
plans _separately_ (this is different than you are used to).

Some plans (to actually make calls and receive ringing calls on your
phones and devices) would require a telephone handset using the
building's Internet connection (Voice Over IP or VoIP). Alternatively,
telephone apps can also be downloaded to a cell phone or home computer,
making them phones also. One such app is Zoiper (
https://www.zoiper.com/en/voip-softphone/download/current )

If people put Zoiper (or any other phone app) on their cell phone, and
use their cell phone data plan, _it should work great_.

If people use telephone handsets with devices to make them work over the
building's Internet, or put phone apps (like Zoiper) on their home
computers -- and use the building's Internet -- then it is a roll of the
dice if it will work, and they will have to trouble-shoot it if it does
not. (This was a problem months ago when I tried it on the Mercy Ridge
Internet WIFI network.)

I speculate this might be because lots of ISPs (Internet Services
Providers) BLOCK VoIP (phone calls over Internet) that are not from
their own company (so Comcast might block non-Comcast VoIP calls). I
suspect a VPN (virtual private network) might have to be set-up to get
around this problem (as I have done at my house since AT&T and T-Mobile
both do this).

So the easiest way to do all of this is:

a) Just move your old number to CallCentric for $1/month and use it as a
voicemail box which you will have to call into to retrieve messages.
(Just buy the inbound "Dollar Unlimited" plan) OR

b) Buy an inbound/outbound plan set from Callcentric and put an app like
Zoiper on your cell phone.

Twisted copper wire has been treated with patina and bent into a bangle.

The photo shows one end of the bangle. The end has been rounded down with a file, revealing the copper colour. The radially outermost surface of the twist has had the patina wiped away, more than the innermost surfaces.
