Eld Varg are a heavy metal trio from Scotland, channeling raw energy and sharp songwriting into their sound. First emerging as a solo project with One Man Army in 2021, the band has since grown into a full force based in Glasgow, now pushing forward with their latest release Destroyer. In this interview with TheNwothm, they discuss their journey, influences, and what’s next as they take their music from the studio to the stage.

TheNwothm: Hey guys! Can you introduce the band and where you are from?

Eld Varg: Hello! We are Eld Varg, a 3 piece heavy metal band from Scotland. In the band we have myself, Ollie Noakes, on Guitars and Vocals, Micah Snow on Bass Guitar, and Andy Hedges on Drums.

TheNwothm: What was the spark that turned Eld Varg from a solo studio project into a full band in 2023?

Eld Varg: It was always something that I had considered from the start of writing music for the band. But as happens a lot, life got in the way and it just never came to be in the early days. It was after the release of the first “demo” version of the first album, One Man Army, and the response that it got that told me that forming a live band was the right move, and so far, I think it was the right call!

TheNwothm: Eld Varg translates to “Fire Wolf” in Swedish. What drew you to that name, and how does it reflect the band’s identity?

Eld Varg: Around the time that I started writing music for Eld Varg, it seemed that every band I was listening to was Swedish. Sabaton, Grand Magus, Amon Amarth, Ghost, Wolf, the list goes on. So it seemed fitting to pay homage to the bands that inspired me to start writing for Eld Varg through the name. I thought that Fire Wolf sounded good in English, so translating that to Swedish landed on Eld Varg, and so it continues!

TheNwothm: You’re based in Glasgow. What’s the most “Glaswegian” thing about Eld Varg?

Eld Varg: Not very much in truth! Although we’re based in Glasgow and all live here, none of us are actually from Glasgow. I’m from the far north east, Micah from North America and Andy from Edinburgh way. But perhaps that is a Glaswegian trait? Glasgow seems to attract all manner of people from all over the world.

TheNwothm: Growing up, who were the artists or bands that made you want to pick up an instrument?

Eld Varg: For me there’s a very clear path that got me to where I am. Kiss is the reason that I picked up a guitar in the first place. Seeing Ace with smoke billowing out of his guitar and fireworks blasting out is enough to make any kid want to pick up the instrument! From there I moved to Metallica and the 80s metal scene, and then finding Swedish heavy metal, and especially Grand Magus, really solidified my style.

TheNwothm: How has Glasgow’s music scene shaped your sound or approach?

Eld Varg: The scene here is very good, and very strong. There are so many bands covering so many styles, and playing very well, that just vicariously, we have all upped our game. Through all of the bands we’ve encountered, I believe we’ve got a pretty unique style within the Scottish metal scene, so anybody looking for downtuned “Viking metal”, there’s only one place to really go!

TheNwothm: What’s your take on the Scottish heavy metal scene right now? Any local acts you rate?

Eld Varg: I think it’s a very strong scene, that it’s only real negative is being so far north. We have bands of all style and levels playing, so whatever metal you’re into, you’ll find it here. I think my favourite band at the moment is Crusaders. They’re also from Glasgow and have just released their first album, which is absolutely worth a listen to.

TheNwothm: Do Norse themes resonate differently when filtered through Scottish culture?

Eld Varg: I think they maybe do, I guess we maybe view them through foreigners goggles. Although I think from a song writing perspective, none of our songs are directly about Norse or Viking stories, but there’s a strong influence there, from a lyrical standpoint and a musical one. I find it a lot of fun to take it in all sorts of directions.

TheNwothm: If Eld Varg were a mythical creature (besides a fire wolf), what would it be?

Eld Varg: If you’ve taken a fire wolf off the table, as a Scot, I’ll have to answer Unicorn! It is out national creature after all!

TheNwothm: Let’s go back to “One Man Army” in 2021. What was the mission behind that debut?

Eld Varg: I think my main driving force behind it was to prove to myself that I could do it. I’d always written music, and never really got to a point of finishing anything, and certainly not to the point of release. I really believed in the music I was writing at the time, so set about choosing the best albums worth of material with the intention of releasing an album. Although I ended up doing a newer, stronger version, I’ll still forever be proud of that album.

TheNwothm: The Reinforced Edition of “One Man Army” came out in 2023. What did you want to reinforce?

Eld Varg: Everything! After doing the first version, I learned so much, about myself, song writing, performing and recording, producing, and everything around release. The songs I felt were really strong, but I knew that I had more in me to give. So I set about rerecording the entire album, but with all the knowledge I’d gained in the few years between. I’ve listened to the 2 versions side by side, and I really think I achieved my goal of “reinforcing” the songs.

TheNwothm: Your latest full-length, “Destroyer,” came out this year. What kind of beast is this record?

Eld Varg: It feels like a natural evolution of the band and the music, without retreading any of the same ground as the last album. I feel it’s a tighter, more focused album that covers everything that Eld Varg does, dialed right up. The subject matter is more direct, the music is more precise and heavy, and I believe it’s some of the best songwriting I’ve done. It’s an absolute monster of an album, and I’m so glad it’s finally out for people to listen to!

TheNwothm: Do you have any interesting stories from the early days of writing it up and until its release?

Eld Varg: There are probably so many stories and funny things that happened during the writing and recording that I could go on for hours. I think the one that stands out for me is the intro to The Hell of Mirrors, specifically the bass and stabs section. I was just hoovering the house, and something triggered in my mind and I started to hum that whole section. I stopped what I was doing, grabbed a guitar and set about a really quick demo that eventually became the intro for the song. I think the song Destroyer started in a similar way, just watching TV and it popped into my head.

TheNwothm: What was the first gig you ever went to, and how did it shape you?

Eld Varg: My first gig was Foo Fighters at the AECC in Aberdeen in 2007. I started with a fairly big one! It was such an amazing show, and I was standing in front of their guitarist Chris Shiftlett, and he was playing a white Les Paul with an Ace Frehley sticker on it. Another Ace nerd!

TheNwothm: Now that Eld Varg is a full band, are there plans to hit the road?

Eld Varg: Absolutely! We have a few shows planned this side of the year to celebrate the release of the album, Glasgow for the release show, Winterstorm Festival and a headline show in Dundee. We already have a few dates in 2026 confirmed with many more close to announcing. We plan to play as far and wide as possible, so would appreciate anybody getting in touch with us!

TheNwothm: Any dream venues or festivals you’d love to play?

Eld Varg: For the UK, Bloodstock is definitely top of the list. Many a favourite band has passed through there, and we’d love to be a part of the festivals history. For Europe, it’s hard not to put Wacken on the list, what an achievement that would be! I’d also really like to be a part of Keep It True. I’ve watched countless videos of line of bands playing there, so it would be an honour to Keep It True!

TheNwothm: Anything else you would like to mention?

Eld Varg: I’d like to personally thank everybody that has supported Eld Varg until this point. It’s been a hell of a lot of fun to create this music, and to have your support is just amazing. For anybody new to us, our new album, Destroyer, is out now in all of the usual streaming places, alongside our first record, One Man Army.

Triple Deity

This is a deity/god with 3 distinct, & apparent, forms that function as a singular whole. These deities can sometimes be called: three-fold, tripled, triplicate, tripartite, triune, triadic, or as a Trinity.

In classical religious traditions, 3 separate beings could be depicted as either a triad (who usually appears as a group such as the Greek Moirai, Charites, & Eriyes; the Norse Norns; or the Irish Morrigan), or a single deity (who’s significant for having 3 aspects such as the Greek Hecate or Roman Diana).

Trinitarian Christianity instead recognizes 3 “divine persons” in God the Father, the Son, & Holy Spirit, this is usually distinguished from the belief of independent gods, or aspects.

The trinity of supreme divinity is in Hinduism. They have the cosmic functions of creation, preservation, & destruction are personified as a triad of deities called Trimurti. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu the preserver, & Shiva the destroyer.

The sacred symbol of Hinduism, the Om/Aum, the sacred sound, syllable, mantra, & invocation, is considered to have an insinuation to the Trimurti. The A, U, & M phonemes of the word are thought to point to creation, preservation, & destruction. Phonemes means any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another. The whole representing the transcendent or absolute Brahman is added.

This also shows 3 basic states of consciousness. In addition to which the whole syllable is interpreted as the subject of the consciousness, the self-principle (Atman). This is considered to be identical with the Brahman.

The Tridevi is the trinity of goddesses that are the consorts of the gods in the Trimurti. They’re personified by the Hindu goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi, & Parvati. In Shaktism, these goddesses are considered the manifestations of Mahadevi, the Supreme Goddess (the female absolute). Also known as Mula-Prakriti or Adi Parashakti.

The Roman goddess Diana was worshipped from the late 6th century BC as diva triformis, “three-form goddess.” Early on, she was confused with the similar Greek goddess, Hekate/Hecate.

The Lake of Nemi was Triviae lacus for Virgil (Aeneid). Horace called Diana: montium customs nemoremque virgo (“keeper of the mountains & virgin of Nemi”) & diva triformis (“three-form goddess”).

Spells & hymns in Greek magical papyri refer to the goddess (called Hecate, Persephone, Selene, etc.) as “triple-sounding, triple-headed, triple-voiced, triple-pointed, triple-faced, triple-necked.”

The Olympian demiurgic triad in Platonic philosophy was made of Zeus, Poseidon, & Pluto/Hades. All were thought to be a monad; the same Zeus who gave rise to the Titanis demiurgic triad of Helios, Apollo, & Dionysus.

The Matres, or Matronae, are pictured as a group of 3. Sometimes with as many as 27 (3x3x3). They were associated with motherhood & fertility.

In the case of the Irish Brigid, it’s ambiguous if she’s a single goddess or 3 sisters named Brigid. The Morrigan sometimes shows up as 1 being, other times as 3 sisters. As do the 3 Irish goddesses of sovereignty – Eriu, Fodla, & Banba.

Nicene Christians profess “1 God in 3 divine persons” (God the Father, God the Son, & God the Holy Spirit). This isn’t a belief, or worship, in 3 gods & isn’t a belief in 3 aspects of God. Both of these ideas are condemned as heresy by the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church also rejects the idea that God is 3 persons & that God is a genus that contains the 3 persons.

A circa 4th century Gnostic text, Trimorphic Protennoia, shows a 3-fold discourse of the 3 forms of Divine Thought: Father, Son, & Mother (Sophia). Micheus, Michar, & Mnesinous, the 3 Heavenly Spirits of Baptism.

Some Christian saints, especially martyrs, are in trios. Because they share a feast day or other day of remembrances.

Modalism is a form of Christian Unitarianism opposed to Trinitarianism. They believe that the 1 God is also just 1 person. But appears in 3 different forms: the Father, Son, & Spirit. Modalism adherents believe that the same 1 God appears in different forms throughout history.

For example, Jesus was 1 form of the same God. They also believe that the Holy Spirit isn’t a separate person from the Father either. But it describes God in action. Modalis is a heresy in orthodox Christianity.
