Dietary fiber is an essential part of one's diet, affecting not just the colon, but also one's immune system, brain, and overall health.

And fiber is found *only* in unrefined non-animal foods. (I would add that refining plant foods removes more than just fiber β€” for example, bran from grain contributes fiber but also minerals and vitamins).

A diverse whole-food non-animal diet is your best diet for health.

I use psyllium husk fiber as a supplement, and find it to be super helpful for staying "regular". I was curious how it worked so I looked it up and came across this paper, journals.lww.com/nutritiontoda . The idea is that the gel forming behavior of psyllium husk fiber is the most important factor allowing all the benefits. Take the paper with a grain of salt though because the authors are affiliated with Proctor and Gamble which makes Metamucil.
