Having a tech bubble respectively being in one hopefully pays it bills now. I need advice:
I have a couple of (semi)old drives which could/can/are be used as external drives. My major issue is that I would like to monitor in some way the SMART status of the drives to avoid negative surprises.
Does anyone here has a solution for that or maybe I am the only one trying to solve this? From my experience external drives don’t help.

Time to start on the 4040 dual disk drive.
I've removed the disk drives and stripped one down and given it a first clean. Everything seems to be there including the belt, the felt pad and the mechanism that moves the head.
Another clean tomorrow and I'll start the other one.

So, the #purists #claim "it's not the same without a real disk drive - the sound and the haptics ..." when it comes to #FloppyDisks and #DiskDrives and they're probably right.
But did you ever notice that this purism seems to be fixed on rotating disk media only.
I mean, no one ever says "it's not the same without loading from tape - the sound, the haptics, the endless waiting ..." or "it's not the same without 9 pin #DotMatrix #Printers - the noise, the paper jams ..."

HAH canadacomputers.com has 4TB SSD SATA drives on sale for less than I paid for 4TB spinning rust drives a few years ago. Prices have certainly dropped. Maybe time to go for two Gold 8TB spinning rust now. :).

We are developing a taste for blood just reading about Bluray and knowing that #diskDrives are being systematically removed from the concept of computing.
