🌳🌱 Did you know woody plants can reshape soil health in ? A study by Martha Mary Farella, David D. Breshears and Rachel Gallery shows that woody plant cover alone can predict nearly 50% of function changes, including nutrient levels and microbial activity. The expansion of drylands – including hyper-arid, arid and semi-arid lands – around the world needs to act as a "wake-up call" for the international community, the president of the UNCCD COP16, Dr. Osama Faqeeha, has said.

If I were President, I'd put the armed forces and the young people to work repairing collapsing ecosystems.

“The ultimate end to a growth economy is the same as an analogous growth: cancer. But for national economies, the victims are nature, soils, forests, people, water, and quality of life. There is one, and only one, solution, and we have almost no time to try it. We must turn all our resources to repairing the natural world, and train all our young people to help. They want to. We need to give them this last chance to create forests, soils, clean waters, clean energies, secure communities, stable regions, and to know how to do it from hands-on experience.”

"Smile"-shaped earthworks, in Kenya, designed to capture, hold & infiltrate rainwater, & to create habitat for plants & animals. A human-scale approach to repairing & regenerating dry, damaged, eroded, deforested land. Before & after pix of earthworks. Once dry, barren land is now covered with prairie and shrub species followed by trees in a successional regenerative process.

"A new study that compared wheat & buckwheat success rates in a high #CO2 atmosphere, plus the temperatures & drought conditions that we can expect in the coming decades, found buckwheat survived & produced its crop of seeds in conditions that killed wheat or severely curtailed grain production. Buckwheat also has the advantage of being gluten-free & rich in fiber & minerals. Because it flowers for months, it is also a favorite for bees & other insects. One plus for farmers is it likes poor soils so no expensive fertilizers are needed." [and it improves the #soil]

Drylands (Biomes 🌍)

Drylands are defined by a scarcity of water. Drylands are zones where precipitation is balanced by evaporation from surfaces and by transpiration by plants. The United Nations Environment Program defines drylands as tropical and temperate areas with an aridity index of less than 0.65. One can classify drylands into four sub-types: Dry sub-humid lands Semi-arid lands Arid lands Hyper-arid landsSome authorities reg...

Every once in a while I stumble across ongoing research on the ~mysterious~ #fairy #circles appearing in #drylands all over the world (much more commonly than originally thought -> Guirado et al. PNAS 2023 doi.org/10.1073/pnas.230403212). Almost as fascinating as the phenomenon itself I find the absolute shitshow happening in the background: Are those regular bare soil circles caused by a Turing instability / self-organized pattern formation or by belowground termite activity?
