🐴 #LostBones 🐘🦥🐪 For #FossilFriday, a new series: 12 horse teeth from across Minnesota, each one headed for radiocarbon dating to finally pin down when these animals moved across the state’s post glacial landscape.

Specimen #1 comes from a private collection near Little Sauk, Minnesota — a single horse tooth pulled from a skull found in the black marl of the Sauk River.

How do they fit into the lives or paleo-Minnesotans?

Mustang Mare, Grulla (Horse Country by CollectA)

A symbol of the old west and the untamable American spirit, the mustang is a feral breed of horse that hasn’t always been a beloved icon of the United States. Upon the settling of the American west these free-roaming horses were heavily persecuted for competing with livestock for food. Although protected in 1971 by the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act (for being “living symbols of the […]

🐴 For #FossilFriday the Eocene “dawn horse” Protorohippus venticolus (cast), housed at the Utah Field House of Natural History in Vernal, UT.

The original specimen—now in a private collection—is about 33cm (13 in) tall at the shoulder. It is one of two known specimens from the Fossil Butte Member at Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming.

I’ll be posting more about North American equids in the Midwest the next few months.

Happy #FossilFriday! 🐴🐘🐪💀 This gorgeous horse mandible comes from Brown County, Minnesota. It was collected by a friend of mine under permit in a state park earlier this year. The bone is deceptively heavy, suggesting it has been partially mineralized. Today, it will be donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota for study.

Mongolian Stallion (Horse Country by CollectA)

As always, I must thank Happy Hen Toys for their sample offer for this review! Konik Mare (Horse Country by CollectA)

I would like to kindly thank Happy Hen Toys for providing this wonderful sample model for review! The Polish Konik horse is a breed with very murky origins and lots of myths surrounding it. The animals certainly descend from very sturdy, stocky, and hardy animals from Central Europe and they may have hybridized with various domestic equines over the years. The most popular theory is that they […]

Running a genetic stop sign accelerates oxygen metabolism and energy production in #horses

Beginning as early as 5000 years ago and lasting until just around 150 years ago, horses were integral to human societies. Their capacity for intense exertion led to their being used as everything from beasts of burden to elite racers. This athleticism is largely driven by increased oxygen consumption rates due to muscles full of mitochondria. #Castiglione et al. found that horses evolved to cope with the increased oxidative burden brought about by mitochondrial activity through the evolution of a single point mutation that increases oxidative phosphorylation while simultaneously mitigating the consequent oxidative stress. —#SachaVignieri #Science #Equus #Equuscaballus #GianniMCastiglione

A huge thank you to Happy Hen Toys and their incredible generosity to provide a sample of this horse model to me! American Cream Draft Stallion (Horse Country by CollectA)

I have to thank Happy Hen Toys for sending me this gorgeous specimen to review! CollectA released this unique model of an American Cream Draft stallion back in 2019 with the item #88846. Common Zebra, foal (Baby Wildlife by Toymany)

Before I start this review I must once again thank @Kenc and our friends at Toymany for donating this review sample. This is the fifth in a series of six baby African animals I will be reviewing as part of Toymany’s 2024 Baby Wildlife collection.
