#floppyemu

Excuse the mess! :D

I'm beta testing a #burgerdisk by @colin_mcmillen on my Delta #apple2e clone.
It's wired to a SmartDisk][ card, and so far it's been working great. I could even daisychain it to a #FloppyEmu!

The #FlaccidOstrich repository is now public! codeberg.org/hkzlab/Flaccid_Os

The Flaccid Ostrich is a clone of #FloppyEmu, a floppy/smartport emulator for #apple2 and #Macintosh computers.

Thanks to #PCBWay for having sponsored the PCBs for this project!

I recreated the schematics to repair my original unit, and while I was at it, I decided to build a clone using THT technology, just in case someone wants some DIY.

EDIT: Sorry, had to pull this. See: tinkerdifferent.com/threads/fl
It was more damageful to community than expected, which wasn't my intention.

An assembled Flaccid Ostrich powered up. Seen from above, showing its dual floppy mode.

There's a reason why I did not yet release the #FloppyEmu clone I'm working on.
See, even though you can find its bootloader floating through the net, I still did not feel totally in the clear about it. No idea if it meant to be out there.
But a few weeks ago, I found this: github.com/una1veritas/mac-flo

And, by going through the disassembly of the current bootloader, they're very, VERY similar.
Enough for me to take the time to add the SSD1306 driver to it, tweak a few things and create an open bootloader I'll release together with the boards.

It works!!!
My #FloppyEmu clone booted its first game!

I used the original bootloader, extracted from my FloppyEmu via ISP. You can find one floating on the net though (HINT: search for a vcfed thread titled "Any hope for a faulty Floppy emu v1.7 revc ?"

And now I can build as many as I need!

Hello there!

The #FlaccidOstrich (#FloppyEmu clone) gives signs of life.

The Flaccid Ostrich laments that its flash is empty.

The floppy emulator HxC by Jean-Francois Del Nero completely replaces the floppy drive (of an Amiga) with an electronic device. The project, which was launched in 2006, is available in two versions, with a SD card port or with USB port. Now the new version 2.16.13.1 is available:

Wrote about how I enhanced my Macintosh 512Ke with USB4VC, BlueSCSI, PicoRC, RGB2HDMI, FloppyEMU and Basilisk II to do modern Internet things like browse Gopher.

Following up on this. I removed the SuperSerial card that was in slot 1, and now Pascal boots. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've also tried different versions of Apple Pascal, and even a Pascal application (ThinkTank). I get the same behavior every time.

FWIW: These same images all work in the Virtual ][ emulator.

I’m not sure I did the best job describing the behavior, so here’s a video.

I’m trying to boot a “pascal formatted” disk on my . I insert the disk, turn the machine on, it reads from disk, clears the screen and then starts beeping. It doesn’t stop until i turn the machine off. Same behavior with pascal formatted images in the .

Where should I start investigating? The disks/images?
The disk controller card?
The drive and floppy emu?
Something else?

The other annoyance is that any time I copy a new image to the SD card, I get a “file is not contiguous” error when I try to use the new file. I have to format and copy over all the files to make it work. Every time.

So I got a for my . It’s pretty cool to be able to use an SD card to emulate floppy disks.

Unfortunately it doesn’t want to boot Pascal disks. The computer just starts beeping repeatedly. Very frustrating.

Hey #MARCHintosh people...

I've posted a little about having found a Mac 512k (my first Mac!) in the garbage room at my office -- it works! I ordered a #FloppyEmu and the machine boots.

I've had to order a mouse off eBay, and it'll be a few weeks before it gets here.

Here's the question: Is it possible to emulate the M0100 mouse? I have a flipper zero (which already has a Bluetooth mouse emulator) which is probably up to the task.

Is there any documentation on the mouse protocol? Is there a hardware widget to convert it to ADB, PS/2, or any other mouse type?

Thx!

Wait, what’s this? It looks like an Atari ST screen? And it’s running on my ?!

This is from Digital Research (the CP/M folks) for the .

The Lisa and GEMDOS was the first development kit for Atari ST TOS which I find fascinating.

It can boot from both floppy (#FloppyEmu) or install it to the ProFile (#ArduinoFile).

I followed these instructions:

68kmla.org/bb/index.php?thread

A messy desk with stacks of free circuit boards to the right, a display at the top showing the GEM desktop, a mouse at the bottom, and lots of wires running haphazardly everywhere. A screenshot of the GEM desktop environment. It looks almost like the Atari ST TOS desktop and fairly reminiscent of the LisaOS.

Seems to work! Look at me, word processing on a Macintosh Plus! ... without a keyboard...

😭

(It's okay, I've got an adapter on its way for that too)

Macintosh Plus booting from SCSI SD, then reading floppy image from Floppy Emu device. Running MacWrite 2.0 from "floppy".
