Prompt 7: Victory

There is an adorable Transcarpathian folktale about humans and animals debating who owns the moonlight. They go on a quest to decide who wins.
In the end, after a long journey, they circle back home, where a young human couple and a pair of cats inform everyone that the moonlight in fact belongs to those in love.

Prompt 6: Potion

One of my favorite folktales is a story from Ethiopia about a woman who asks a wise man for a potion, to help her stepson accept her. Man tells her she needs a lion's whiskers for the potion.
The woman, with patience and courage, manages to get close enough to a lion to get the whiskers. The wise man then tells her:
"There is no potion. You just need the same patience, courage and time with the child."

Prompt 5: Costume

This prompt reminds me of a Polish Roma folktale about a girl called Sister of Birds. She could summon the birds with the colors of her dress. Red skirt summoned robins, grey cloak summoned cuckoos, yellow scarf summoned orioles, erc. They told her stories, and helped her escape from a witch.

Paper collage art + Adobe Photoshop touches. ✂️🎨
This illustration shares a sad legend of two sisters who were once forest snake goddesses. 🐍🐍 They were supposed to practice their spiritual gifts in isolation for one thousand years. But right before they completed their trainings, the two sisters decided to visit the human world, which led to their ultimate rebellion. For #folktaleweek2022 #folktaleweek

Prompt 4: Rebel

This prompt reminded me of the Jewish folktale titled The Rebel Princess.

It's about a princess who runs away with the man she loves. They get separated, and she goes through several adventures. At one point, she recruits a crew of women and takes over a pirate ship.
Eventually she becomes queen, and finds her lost love.

Prompt 3: Stars

By far the cutest Hungarian origin story involving stars is from the Lake Balaton area:

They say a hedgehog wandered across the sky, accidentally poking holes in it, and that's how the Milky Way came to be.

Prompt 2: Tree

A Transylvanian Roma folktale says in the old days trees could walk.
A rich man once saw a beautiful old oak, and ordered it to follow him home, to be cut up as firewood. Then he ordered the tree to carry him and his food along the way. Then ordered it to steal the bell from the church tower, just because.
At that point, lightning struck, and God decided trees should not walk and obey people anymore.

Of course, the most famous of the for the seventh day of here on .

In my translation of “The Three Bill-Goats Bruse,” I have restored the goats’ proper name, but the action remains the same. Three goats, one troll, one bridge.

Another Fool story I love is a Transcarpathian folktale titled "The Boy Who Wanted to Walk on the Clouds".

It's about a boy everyone believes to be a fool because he dreams of walking on the clouds. Eventually he sets out on his own, meets a talking ferret and then the King of the Mountains, and goes on a journey that takes him all the way to the clouds.

And from there, he waves at the people who didn't believe him.

Day 6 of here on .

Sometimes in , a hero needs good help to win the princess from her fickle father. In “Askeladden and the Good Helpers” there is help to be found.

I'm not an illustrator (and I'm late to the party) but I'm loving the Folktale Week prompts, so I'm just gonna do stories.

Prompt 1: Fool

My favorite "fool" tale is the Grimms' Queen Bee. Simpleton, the youngest of three princes, protects an anthill, a beehive, and a flock of ducks from his brothers' wanton cruelty. Later on, the grateful animals help him break the curse on an enchanted castle. 🐝🦆🐜 A tale that values healthy masculinity.

#Friday gets it’s name from the #AngloSaxon #Goddess Frīg (Pronounced Free-ya, with a rolling r). She was the Devine queen, the Devine Feminine, Wife of Ƿōden (#Woden pronounced Whooden).

Island #folklore says that #Brading (below) was the site of worship for Frīg, and after the defeat of #Arwald, the last #Pagan king, the land was reconsecrated for Mary, and made the the mother church of the #IsleOfWight

On nights like this, Frīg still be walks the #wyrd

A rainy high street in the kings town of Brading. The soft glow of oncoming traffic is just over the hill. Warm light fills the darkness from the old shop fronts on either side and the slick road reflects them back.

Day 5 of here on .

The most popular of the I have translated, “White Bear King Valemon” tells of a princess who goes to live with a white bear who is not what he at first appears. When she does the opposite of what he tells her to do, she has to go on a long quest to find and save him.
