Overnight trip to the coast with a lunch stop at the Halls Gap market. A gaggle of Gang-gang cockatoos flew over and landed up a tree not far from where we’d parked. This time I had my proper camera within reach!

Still tricksy to photograph straight up and into the back-lit drizzle, but this’ll do.

Grampians National Park bushfire contained as rain brings relief
abc.net.au/news/2025-01-06/coo

Firefighters have succeeded in containing the bushfires in the Grampians region. They worked tirelessly for the last three weeks and today's rain would have been a welcome relief. The bushfire covered 76,000 hectares of national park and farmland.

The Grampians/Gariwerd National Park and surrounding region shows you the rugged beauty of Nature. It's an ancient landscape, and experiencing it in person takes your breath away. I'm fortunate to have been there on holidays and hikes several times over years. I'm no expert, but I think that experience can give you some insights about why it's such an important and sacred place to local Indigenous people, and why it's been home to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwardjali people for more than 20,000 years.

‘The "wilderness" myth of Australia’s previous generation of environmentalists has proved to not only be historically and culturally deficient, but has also had dire implications for our physical world’.

It’s been awhile for Melbourne, the sun being filtered through the smoke of bushfires, what you are smelling is Gariwerd burning 🔥 a place with over 50 endemic plant species. Respect to the CFA volunteers battling it.

I did wonder how they emptied the toilets on the Grampians Peaks Trail remote campsites. I never imagined…. #Forest #Hiking #Camping #HikingAus #Bushwalking #Gariwerd #GrampiansNP #GPT #GrampiansPeakTrail

Signal Peak, starting at Cassidy Gap trailhead and coming down the other side to Mt. Abrupt car park. A really beautiful walk, though in clouds at the top so not able to see the view. Did get a pretty close brief encounter with a pair of wedgetail eagles. gaiagps.com/public/Zdl1PLSm3ha #wildlife #WildOz #Forest #Hiking #Camping #HikingAus #Bushwalking #Gariwerd #GrampiansNP #GPT #GrampiansPeakTrail

It's a trap!
Hoping to catch some smoky mice tonight in the Victoria Ranges in #gariwerd.
They get some food, a cosy bed for the night and a free ear piercing and we get some tissue culture and data.

Time to head home. Had a great week in Dunkeld - I highly recommend it as a less touristy alternative to Halls Gap and a great place to explore the southern part of Gariwerd. And very happy with the Telos tent; it’s kept me very comfortable for two camping weeks this summer. #Gariwerd #GrampiansNP #wildlife #WildOz #Forest #Hiking #Camping #HikingAus #Bushwalking #Dunkeld #SeaToSummit

A good walk around Larngi bunja (Chimney Pots). Turned out to be right at the limit of what my daughter can manage with steep rough barely improved paths, rock scrambles etc. But we made it. Proud of her pushing her physical limits and not letting her anxiety stop her. #wildlife #WildOz #Forest #Hiking #Camping #HikingAus #Bushwalking #Gariwerd #GrampiansNP #GPT #GrampiansPeakTrail
