Met dit werk onderzoekt kunstenaar Mella Jaarsma de evolutie van theeculturen, vooral hoe theeplantages in West-Java pas na 1826 succesvol werden ontwikkeld.

Jaarsma is gefascineerd door de lange levensduur van theebomen, die generaties meegaan: 'Sinds de koloniale tijd worden de theebomen elke vijftien jaar vervangen door nieuwe scheuten van de oude bomen. De uitgerukte bomen worden verbrand in de fabriek om energie te leveren voor het drogen van theebladeren, een voortdurende cyclus van vernieuwing en consumptie.'

Tijdens haar onderzoek vond Jaarsma op een tweedehandsmarkt blokdrukken van theeverpakkingen uit de eind jaren veertig en vijftiger jaren. Deze prints weerspiegelen de overgang van Indonesië naar onafhankelijkheid en tonen de kruising van koloniale erfenissen, handel en nationale identiteit.

I have always been confused by folks’ interpretation of high tea as being a fancy affair. I grew up with the understanding it is just supper. Low tea, however, is fancy-ass. Not sure how the meanings changed so much. I grew up calling the midday meal dinner, the evening meal supper or high tea, and a late night snack was lunch. Breakfast is the only meal name I use that remains unambiguous to most folks. I guess this is what happens when I grow up in the Maritimes and Newfoundland. #meals #WordMeanings #tea #HighTea
