If you work on evolutionary networks (ancestral recombination graphs, #admixture graphs, #phylogenetic networks), please submit an abstract to our symposium on "Networks in population genetics and phylogenetics: Theory, methods, and applications". It will be part of #Evol2024 in Montreal, July 26-30: evolutionmeetings.org

Hybridizing #species are usually maintained by genome-wide selection against #introgression or by selection on a few “genomic islands.” @yanivbrandvain & Shelley Sianta explore #PLOSBiology study which finds a new pattern – 60 SNPs across the #genome differentiate #Penstemon species with different #pollinators. New Study Demonstrates Influence of Neanderthal DNA on Human Complex Traits
Humans whose genetic ancestors lived outside Africa have a small proportion of the genome that traces back to interbreeding events with Neanderthals.

There are signals of #introgression throughout the genus #Helianthus (#Sunflowers). The member species are largely reproductively isolated but are nevertheless connected through through occasional or frequent gene flow.

#Hybridization and #introgression can boost #speciation, but hybridization may also cause loss of #biodiversity - how do species avoid this “dark side of introgression”? Discuss with us @m_matschiner in our symposium no.3 at #SMBE2023 in sunny Italy! smbe2023.org/

A new paper based on Paul Thompson's 1978 dissertation on the Quercus prinoides complex (the chinquapin oaks), describing two hybrids involving Q. prinoides / Q. muehlenbergii. This is a tough group... there is still ample need in North America for taxonomic discovery, documentation of variation within species, and clarification of the effects of hybridization on the species we recognize.

Representation of inferred hybrids between Quercus prinoides and six other species: Q. bicolor, Q. alba, Q. macrocarpa, and Q. stellata of eastern North America; Q. grisea of the southwest and (mostly) northern Mexico; Q. gambelii of the southern Rocky Mountains (a complicated entity in its own rights! See McVay et al. 2017 for a taste of that story: https://doi.org/10.1139/gen-2016-0206).

Figure 4. A pictorial representation of leaf variation within the Quercus prinoides complex in the central United States. Quercus Ă—mohlenbrockii corresponds to the leaf between Q. prinoides and Q. gambelii, and Q. Ă—voigtii corresponds to the leaf between Q. prinoides and Q. grisea.
