#Epicurus, the precursor to #Lucretius in the #materialist #philosophical tradition, believed that we need knowledge only because without it we are unhappy. I find it wonderful that following one's curiosity to bring oneself #joy is fundamental to the roots of the Western philosophical tradition that led to #science.

@cjpaloma Many in #materialist #capitalist #societies have lost sight of the #Mazlov #hierarchy of #needs. Some are duped by the #hex of #consumer #propaganda, some are just not aware & the #elite few positively revel in living #life at the #expense of #others ✊🏽

An interview with the creators of ‘Literally No Place’, Daniel Felstead and Jenn Leung, is available here:

'“Our side quest was to try and offer a different perspective on #ai one that doesn't treat it as, like, some kind of saviour or looming apocalypse,” they explain. “We wanted to present AI as this, like, twisted reflection of our present moment, in all its unhinged, horrific, and glorious wonder.”

They cite Kate Crawford's #AtlasofAI as an influence. For a different (less zombie #materialist) take on AI and Crawford's book, see here:

🎬 Here's how I'm selling my film newsletter now. I think this will work.

(to be clear, no one's ever called me the suburban Žižek - this is more of an aspiration).

They call me the suburban Žižek.
What you’ll get here is plain-language film reviews with some political, cultural and economic context. No bullshit about singular authorial brilliance, no movie-star mystique, no gullible ‘actors studio’ flannel - a materialist critique of the immaterial joys of the movies.

“The #materialist conception of history starts from the proposition that the production of the means to support human life and, next to production, the exchange of things produced, is the basis of all social structure; that in every society that has appeared in history, the manner in which wealth is distributed and society divided into classes or orders is dependent upon what is produced, how it is produced, and how the products are exchanged.”

Truly people aren’t money oriented, they love quality things, not turning the earth to crap. The bourgeois are the worst kind of greedy. Space travel? Crypto? Internet privacy transgressions? And the politicians roll over for them cause they’re money-oriented materialists too.

Dean Dettloff ( , deandettloff.com/) writes in response to having just watched the . He calls for a critique of .

I agree. It would be a valuable project in more ways than one.

Screengrabs below from the birdsite. (apologies if that offends :blobaww:)

The first part of a Twitter thread from Dean Dettloff:
"Finished the Hillsong doc and I'm once again surprised we haven't had anyone do a materialist analysis of global evangelicalism, tracking the profit flows, property ownership, ideological exchanges, transnational political strategies, etc. Huge project but it's right there.
E.g., Rios Montt in Guatemala was part of a church plant out of the Jesus People movement in California; televangelists like Swaggart, Robertson, Falwell, etc. fundraised for right wing dictators in LatAm; evangelicalism is often a conscious wedge into liberation theology.
In contemporary politics, global evangelical connections have been essential to right wing politicians like Trump, Bolsonaro, Añez, etc., and regressive movements like homophobic dissidents in Cuba and anti-LGBT legislation in Africa.
Hillsong is such an important piece because it's basically the McDonaldization of evangelicalism: reproducible, homogenous, consumerist. Ironically like a kind of capitalist Latin Christendom. You can go to worship anywhere and hear all the same songs produced in Australia."The second part of a Twitter thread from Dean Dettloff:
"Hillsong is such an important piece because it's basically the McDonaldization of evangelicalism: reproducible, homogenous, consumerist. Ironically like a kind of capitalist Latin Christendom. You can go to worship anywhere and hear all the same songs produced in Australia.
There's a big moment of ideological critique around evangelicalism that I think is good, but we're missing the material motivations below. That part is usually referenced as a point about hypocrisy, but it tells us something more interesting about capitalism and global politics.
I guess I'm saying we need an analysis of evangelicalism precisely as a project of global class struggle. I mean D. L. Moody was formed in direct opposition to the Haymarket Riots; Billy Graham in relation to the social Gospel; Robertson to Reagan etc. but beyond the US too."

A story published in EXPLORE: The Journal of Science & Healing recounts the Near-Death Experience () of Bettina Peyton a now-retired doctor.
Dr Peyton’s NDE occurred in 1988 when she was 32 years old and working at Tufts New England Centre in the US.
Prior to her experience Dr Peyton had no belief in life after and considered herself a “strident ”.

It’s a important to remember the immaterial bases of #fascism. #WilhelmReich watched the rise of Nazism in real time, and #socialist attempts to counter it. The experience convinced him a purely #materialist opposition wasn’t enough. Understanding of the psychopathologies underpinning the orientations is vital, and developing strategies to address them. The challenge is magnified in an era of instant mass communication. But Reich’s lessons remain valuable.

"A century of #agnosticism about the true #natureofmatter hasn’t found its way deeply enough into other fields, where #materialism still appears to be the most sensible way of dealing with the world and, most of all, with the #mind.

Some #neuroscientists think that they’re being precise and grounded by holding tightly to #materialist credentials… But this conviction is out of step with what we #physicists know about the #materialworld."
