Reading these two books in parallel has been a profound coincidence. Coccia approaches life from both philosophical and scientific perspectives, but also turns everything around, to provoke our contemporary concerns about nature. Shea brings up the ethical and spiritual aspects of dying, whose awareness can make living more meaningful.

The prologue from _Metamorphoses_ by Ovid translated by Allen Mandelbaum:

> My soul would sing of metamorphoses. But since, o gods, you were the source of these bodies becoming other bodies, breathe your breath into my book of changes: may the song I sing be seamless as its way weaves from the world’s beginning to our day.

I think it's a fantastic trans mantra.

Cover of the 2013 Everyman's edition of Ovid's "Metamorphoses", translated by Allen Mandelbaum in 1993.

The background is a cropped image of the head and shoulders of Ovid from Luca Signorelli's 1504 fresco in Cappella di San Brizio in the Cathedral of Orvieto. Ovid is portrayed facing towards our left, a laurel wreath on his head, and wearing a yellow, wool-lined coat buttoned at his chest. The image is covered with a grid of fine bronze-coloured dots.

The author's name in the upper quarter of the cover, is in white sans-serif capitals in a red rectangle that includes a white decorated border. The title, in serif capitals, is across the middle of the cover. In the bottom quarter, "Translated by Allen Mandelbaum" is in white sans serif capitals inside a small rectangle the same bronze colour as the dots in the grid, and below that, in white serif capitals, in the publisher, Everyman's Library.

If you're interested in #art I suggest tuning in for the online premiere of the #film I made with fellow #Orkney #artist Vernon Bradley next Friday, Dimittit In Artes. It's about his work, mortality, and the artistic struggle in general. It's a sincere piece but not entirely serious.

We'll be live streaming it together on YouTube but it won't be made available after the fact, so don't miss it! Link below.

Eamonn Keyes has done a good write-up of the #film I've made with fellow #orkney #artist Vernon Bradley, Dimittit In Artes.

I could write a whole dissertation on the subtext in this film but Eamonn has picked up on the key themes. #mortality vs #immortality being a big one.

Vernon Bradley: Dimittit In Artes is premiering at #Stromness Community Centre in #Orkney tomorrow at 7.30. Tickets £5 on the door. Not suitable for children.

Vernon Bradley thinks this #film is about him, but for me it's about #Ovid.

#Metamorphoses — up close and personal with mythology

With #AlinaCojocaru among the cast, the choreographer is staging a classical double bill at the #TheatreRoyal, Bath

“Nymphs, shepherds and passing deities have been food for narrative ballet since the 17th century. But for #KimBrandstrup, classical #mythology is more of a touchstone than a template, supplying the starting point for complex and mysterious relationships”

Text Shot: Metamorphoses is a short but supersaturated double bill of works inspired by the Minotaur myth and the story of Cupid and Psyche. Both pieces were commissioned by Deborah Warner as part of her two-year stint as artistic director of Bath’s tiny 126-seat Ustinov Studio. Brandstrup is untroubled by the limited performance space: “I find the proximity strangely liberating,” said the Danish choreographer and filmmaker when I spoke to him last month. He likened the short sightlines to the intimacy of the camera: “ . . . their faces, their hands, the sense of touch. In an opera house you’ve got to reach the top of the gallery but in this room you are so close that you need much less performative power and it’s that closeness that I’m interested in.”Alina Cojocaru and Matthew Ball in ‘Cupid and Psyche’
© Foteini Christofilopoulou

Brandstrup and the Ustinov certainly have no difficulty attracting high-profile artists. Metamorphoses features the Royal Ballet’s Kristen McNally and Matthew Ball, former Royal and English National ballerina Alina Cojocaru and contemporary dance and hip-hop virtuoso Tommy Franzen.Tommy Franzen and Kristen Mcnally in ‘Minotaur’ © Foteini Christofilopoulou

In the original Cupid and Psyche myth, Venus, jealous of the nymph’s beauty, instructs Cupid to seduce her in total darkness. Brandstrup subverts the usual dynamic so that it is Cupid the man-child who is reluctant to see or be seen, unwilling to commit to a completely open relationship.

When we first see the brooding Ball he is lit chiaroscuro, like a lost Caravaggio. In the first exploratory exchange he teases his Psyche, blowing in her ear or paddling his fingers and toes in a stray shaft of light. The duets gain pace and soon the tiny Cojocaru is flying through the darkness in a succession of thrilling overhead lifts to a beguiling playlist of Bach, Arvo Pärt and others.

A few lines by an old Roman (originally), relevant for the day. When I was a teenager I spent a lot of time inside this long poem by Ovid. On the blog is a short excerpt from the version I lived with.
