Some cycling advocates want us to follow the rules of the road because not doing so "gives cyclists a bad name." I dislike that narrative. It only reinforces the confirmation bias and out-group homogeneity held against us. I cycle for many different reasons, but "representing the cycling community" is not one of them. If someone sees me run a red light (which, btw, I very rarely do) and hastily concludes that "cyclists break laws," it's their problem, not mine.
