Kennedy Center ("Center") for performing arts is committed to providing an environment that reflects the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and mutual respect. The Center values integrity, transparency, and accountability in every aspect of its operations. We ask that all employees read, understand, and acknowledge this policy.

II. Policy The wearing of masks or facial coverings is strictly prohibited while on the Center's premises, unless otherwise approved by a reasonable accommodation. Disciplinary Action: • First Violation: The employee will be reminded of the No Mask Policy and that employees must seek a valid medical certification in order to wear a mask. Employee will receive a formal written warning. The employee will be sent home for the remainder of the day.

• Second violation: The employee will be reminded of the No Mask Policy and that employees must seek a valid medical certification in order to wear a mask. Employee will receive a second written warning. The employee will be sent home for the remainder of the day. • Third Violation: Employment will be terminated immediately. All employees are expected to comply fully with this policy. Exceptions must be approved in writing by The Human Resources Department prior to being on site.

The Center announced an employee mask ban today, putting the lives of staff and patrons at risk.

Employees must obtain a doctor’s note if they feel their disability merits wearing a mask. They will be forced to divulge medical information to their employer.

Even if they successfully jump through all the hoops, they will be removed from a public facing role.

Everyone needs the right to protect their health. You shouldn’t need to already be disabled to be “allowed” to avoid COVID.

This is about optics and control. They want to promote the narrative that COVID is over, even though they know it’s not true.

This is an inevitable consequence of failure to normalize masks. Please if you can wear a mask, wear one now.

It won’t be long before the fascists ban them altogether.

III. Mask Wearing Masks should not be worn in public spaces in the Center. This is especially important for our public-facing and front-of-house employees. If you believe that you are too sick (or contagious) to come to work without wearing a mask, please stay at home until the illness subsides, you will not be penalized. If you believe you have a disability under the ADA that requires wearing a mask, please obtain a medical certification from your provider and consult with your supervisor about securing an approval as a reasonable accommodation to perform your job, and you will be relocated to a non-forward facing position and continue your current position.

Texas and New York are currently trying to enact mask bans, even as measles cases sore and politicians adopt eugenicist mindsets that say it’s our “patriotic duty” to remain healthy.

@ahimsa_pdx @broadwaybabyto masks have been super helpful in the summer months to deal with our allergies. we have an air purifier at home that also helps a lot, but still have to open windows sometimes and go outside. just gonna say the minor discomfort of a well fitted and breathable mask is nothing compared to the asthma issues we'd have previously on a bad pollen day.
we wear masks for allergies, we wear masks for air pollution (which in a city is a daily issue, there's a lot of cars unfortunately), and we wear them to protect ourselves and others from infections. all of these are valid and important uses.

If you think mask bans are “no big deal” because there’s medical exemptions, please consider the following:

😷 Police are not doctors
😷 Many disabilities are invisible
😷 Disabled people don’t live in a bubble. I need my friends and caregivers to mask to protect me
😷 Everyone should have the right to protect their health, you shouldn’t have to already be sick to be permitted to mask
😷 Criminalizing masks sends a message that maskers are “bad”. It emboldens anti-maskers and increases odds of aggression

The reality is that mask bans are discriminatory, ableist and eugenicist. They push disabled people out of public spaces. They put marginalized and POC at increased risk of police profiling.

There’s no official policy for a medical exemption either, it’s at police discretion.

If you’re stopped and questioned, you will have to prove you’re masking for the “right reasons”

I’m more than willing to admit that if I were stopped by a cop for masking, I would appear nervous, shaky, tachycardic and probably “suspicious”.

Not because I’m doing anything wrong, but because my illnesses do not respond well to stress and the police are stressful.

It’s not right to put the onus on the masker to defend their right to mask. We’re still in a global pandemic. Texas has a measles outbreak. There’s tuberculosis in Kansas. Bird flu is spreading and it’s the worst year for influenza A in over a decade.

Masks are a public health tool. They’re a disability accommodation. They should NOT be criminalized.

Mainstream media coverage of mask bans has given space for politicians’ false claims that masks are associated with wrong-doing, like crime and antisemitism, while overlooking that bans are, in many ways, an effort to suppress the reality of COVID-19.

There are 21 states and numerous municipalities with laws against masks or disguises on the books. People who wear masks would benefit from knowing exactly how they are worded and any legal precedents, as police are often under-informed.

Both Republicans and Democrats are pushing more severe mask bans than ever before in history. Democrats are more likely to give lip service to health needs without offering meaningful protections.
