woooo, today I got the Rise C kit from extremeRate installed. this kit converts a ps4 controller from usb micro to usb c, and it also adds four "remap" buttons on the back, which can be programmed to copy another button on the controller. it's tournament-legal, if you care about that.

I wish they'd go back to written guides. not a fan of the video instructions. But I was able to figure it out, and I admit, it does give me a lot more views of where all the wires go.

this is definitely the hardest kit of theirs I've done so far due to the thin wires. I only burnt myself with the soldering iron twice!

I do *not* want to go back in there again. which means... I can start covering it in stickers, and not worry about having to peel them off later!

in my pursuit of an all-paper icehouse set, i discovered a new variant of the stacker stash box! the Pyramides Papyrium box is long enough for a full plastic stash, or *four* paper stashes, and it uses *no glue!* Eat your heart out, ee0r.

I'll post the print files on my website later; remind me if I forget!

here's a fun trick: I arranged these shapes I want to cut such that, after tracing the edges with knifebot, I can slice the page with a regular straight line cutter, and be left with a 9x6" area suitable for a catalog envelope.

hey WAIT A MINUTE. knifebot can knife things besides stickers! I can use this to automate the hard part of the origami pyramids!

I redesigned the pattern so that the cuts are harder but the folds are easier, because knifebot is going to do the cutting for me!

So I don't forget next time: the knife offset seems to be about x+5, y+19, but just to make sure, next page I design will have a square alignment marker in the middle to do a 'test cut' before I cut the rest of the sheet.

woooo, it is done! really glad I went with the textured vinyl; it makes the touchpads feel nice, although it does make it hard to see the little spots on the rest of the texture, ah well.

update: re-did the image in higher resolution and also slapped a background texture on it, its recycled from an unfinished minecraft project in like 2019, with a few tweaks made based on the martian origami project recently. it feels really good to realize that I have art assets I can repurpose. like "hell yeah I made that"

while I'm at it, here's two other "phone as console" gizmos I rather enjoy

razer kishi: this thing straps onto the sides of your phone, turning it into a nintendo switch / psp style controller. pros: cheap, effective, collapsible. cons: blocks the headphone jack, can't be used as a standalone controller.

dualshock 4: you can get a mounting clip to turn this existing controller into a handheld. The phone mount is on a hinge this time more like a GBA SP or a nDS. pros: works with a controller I already have, and its a good one too -- I've modded this one so it has real metal joysticks. cons: pretty top heavy when you're holding it, doesn't fit in my pocket.
