Lone Survivor: It always seems rather sad to come across an orphaned tenement which has been left standing when all its neighbours have been demolished. Often, as is the case for this one on Keppochhill Road in Glasgow, the survivors have a pub on their ground floor and this was what saved it as it was deemed too expensive to buy out the licence for such premises.

Family Department sign on the Ladywell Bar on Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow. Dating from a time when women weren't widely welcome in pubs, the Family Department was where they could buy alcohol for comsumption at home.

I've been regularly walking past the Buttery on Argyle Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow for almost a decade now, and only spotted this rather charming threshold mosaic for the first time today. I presume it dates from the time in the 1930s and 40s when it was home to pub called the Shandon Bells. This was one of three Glasgow bars owned by the publican Lawrence Brady, all of which bore this same name!

While you can still just about make out its name along the front of the building where it once was, the Western Bar no longer exists and the site is now occupied by a branch of Greggs. In an ironic twist of fate, the Dowanhill Church in Hyndland, whose congregation were key players in the fight to keep Hyndland dry, is now home to the Cottiers Bar.

While the temperance movement managed to ensure Hyndland had no bars until the Rock opened, in the face of many protests, in 1966, the Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association helped ensure the residents of Partick always had plenty of choices of where to drink, a situation which continues right up until today.

Decorative tiling on the Argyll Arcade entrance to Sloans in central Glasgow. Established as a coffee house in 1797, Sloans is one of a number of potential contenders for the title of the oldest pub in the city.

The decoration over the entrance to Hielan Jessie on Gallowgate in Glasgow.

One of the oldest pubs in Glasgow, it is named after Jessie Brown who opened it in 1857 after her husband was killed fighting with the 17th Highland Regiment in India.

Back my book of photos of closed down pubs (and the odd shop) and get a tiny tiny closed down pub (by the insanely talented @joeyruthers). Limited reward, so check out the link in bio to back this overly niche photo book!

The Black Horse, Coventry. Soon to be pulled down. It actually hasn't functioned as a pub for a few years now and sadly I never got the opportunity to get drunk there. The owner gutted the inside and made it a house of multiple occupancy.
