Are there any #ornithologists ? I have a dumb question about sparrows (both house sparrow and eurasian tree sparrow).

Near 3 days ago, I saw a lot of sparrows on the streets. Also a lot of them flew to my window to eat some seeds. Despite the air temperature was near 0°C.

But suddenly, after one night all sparrows are disappeared from the streets — I see no one, only another species: crows, wagtails and tits.

First, I thought that all sparrows are migrated somewhere. But from Wikipedia I learned that they may migrate only to nearby rural areas to eat some insects, if there are no food in the city. But (again) in my district are enough bird feeders with food.

So I really have a question — where (and why) are all the sparrows flew? :drgn_think: I live at the outskirts of city with a big count of trees and a small forest nearby, so looks like here should be good conditions for birds :drgn_think:

Any know if the "Spangled Drongo" is any relation to the "Bloody Drongo!" my dad used to call me as a kid when I was daydreaming instead of helping him repair an engine?

Any #ornithologists on here?

Can you guess the bird from this visual representation of their call?

A long falling note blends into three sharp cries, represented by a line moving diagonally down then forming three n-shaped peaks.

Sweden's #MooseMigration Live Stream makes international news! 😄

"It became, in a strange way, gripping because nothing catastrophic is happening, nothing spectacular is happening," she said. "But something very beautiful is happening in that minute-by-minute moment."

I have heard of #Birders (#ornithologists), but... #moose?... What do you call those watching moose, "Moosers," or simply Swedes? 🤷‍♂️

Most #birds #migrate at night, when it’s more difficult to identify them visually and while most birders are in bed. For over a century, acoustic monitoring has hovered tantalizingly out of reach as a method that would solve #ornithologists’ woes...software called BirdVoxDetect, the result of a collaboration between New York University, the #Cornell Lab of #Ornithology, and École Centrale de Nantes, identifies the bird and classifies it to the #species level. technologyreview.com/2024/12/1 #migration

#Ornithologists discover world's largest #hummingbird is actually two species phys.org/news/2024-05-ornithol

Extreme elevational migration spurred cryptic speciation in giant #hummingbirds pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2313

"The northern population stays in the high #Andes year-round while the southern population migrates from sea level up to 14,000 feet (~4,300 m) for the nonbreeding months. The two species appear identical. But looks deceive—their genomes and behaviors tell a different story."

Ever wonder how #ornithologists #capture and mark #birds from high in a #tropical #forest #canopy? The @WilsonOrnithSoc's Student and Early Professionals Committee has shared this fascinating window into the operation, courtesy of #NickRusso and colleagues at #UCLA and in the field in #Cameroon. The target? White-thighed #Hornbill! youtu.be/Yl040eykTPo?si=FAqQ-7

Screencap from Birds of the World illustrating White-thighed hornbill with a photo from Christopher Sloan. The bird is photographed in profile, perched in a tree canopy above numerous small, round, light-green fruits – one of which is in its bill. The bird is black with a massive head and enormous bill that curves down to a point and is topped with a horny casque almost as big as the bill itself. The wings folded over the back are clean white on their trailing edge, as are the flanks, undertail coverts, and thighs. The tail is long and white with a black band about halfway down its length.

On my way this #TweetlessTuesday to #BirdsAsBridges to connect with #ornithologists from all over, see old friends, and learn more than my feeble brain will hold. #AOS-SCO #London, #Ontario

Yesterday morning, about 04:45, an #Amsel (i.e. a #Blackbird but not the North American one, that is a different species) perched on our balcony (4. Etage). He didn't sing, he gave an address. There were full-on sentences, even paragraphs. It went on for several minutes, quite possibly five minutes. It really was like he was speaking, not singing, but speaking. I have never heard a bird do this before (full disclosure, I am a #bird fan). It was *not* a song, or a bird-song, in any way. It was a speech. A declaration I think. Has anyone experienced anything like this? #Ornithology answers from #Ornithologists are most welcome

Any #ornithologists help me. An #owl visited our owlbox in October, but no nesting (yet?) this spring. What species is this? Is it likely to have been scared off by the #infrared leds used for the camera (2x 850nm at quite low current, barely visible to humans)? #Birds #vision #barnowl #esp32 #esp32cam #IoT

So adding to previous posts about #PhotoEditing nightmares, #ornithologists like to change the names of, like, half the species every 10 years.
I'm not kidding, in the 2011 the American Ornithology Something decided that a bird in North America and an identical bird in Europe were completely different species and now have a new common name as well.
It's like if the IAU had not only demoted Pluto, they renamed it Mickey.

Delighted to be featured as part of the new American Ornithological Society #FacesOfAOS series.

AOS is doing amazing groundwork to build an inclusive community and I'm glad to be a part of it.

#Ornithologists don’t fit into a single mold—this campaign highlights the broad spectrum of #AOSmembers, provide opportunities for recognition & connection, & personalize the field of #ornithology.

Excited to see all the cool AOS members who will be featured next!

#Hunters and #ornithologists partner up to end #raptor persecution

Despite efforts to tackle the illegal killing of #birds in #Denmark, the illegal poisoning, shooting, and trapping of birds of prey remains a problem in Denmark. But this year, an unusual partnership has been concluded that could turn the tide. #BirdLife Denmark and the Danish Hunter’s association have joined forces to end raptor killings for good. flightforsurvival.org/hunters-
