an einer weiß gestrichenen wand sitzt eine ziemlich helle assel. die grundfarbe ist beige, dazu sind auf den segmenten braune flecken. da sich die flecken von segment zu segment unter nur graduellen veränderungen wiederholen und in der mitte am stärksten sind, entsteht ein sowohl quer- als auch längsgestreifter gesamteindruck. der kopf ist weit dunkler, schwarz (daher der name), genauso wie der mittlere teil der hinteren segmente, so dass da ein fleck entsteht den man auch für einen kopf halten könnte. womöglich hilft das der assel, fressfeinde im unklaren zu lassen wo vorne und hinten ist. die fühler sind zweimal fast rechtwinklig abgeknickt, so dass ihre spitzen auf schulterbreite nach hinten zeigen

nahaufnahme einer assel auf asphalt. ihre 14 segmente des chitinpanzers sind schuppenartig, dachziegelartig bzw. wie die teile einer ritterrüstung von vorn nach hinten überlappend angeordnet, anthrazit-grau mit einem dünnen hellen rand nach hinten, was sie schön betont. entlang der mittellinie sind hell-gelbe etwas unregelmäßig geformte flecken, in den flächen links und rechts daneben hellgraue schlierenartige, die aussehen wie schrammen.

It's #WoodlouseWednesday ! Here is Armadillo tuberculatus in all of its bumpy glory! Adults are less so than juveniles. These pictures were taken during the last round of maintenance in my culture bins.

A handful of Armadillo tuberculatus isopods under a piece of bark. You can see the difference in tubercles, with the larger, adult individual being the most smooth of all - though not quite as smooth and shiny as their cousin, the more well-known Armadillo officinalis (not shown in this picture).

I think the transmission in my 2007 Mazda3 is toast. It had been shifting badly and the AT indicator light turned on the last couple of times I drove it, so decided to try and scan it for error codes. Nothing came up so I thought I would take it around the block. Didn't even make it up the hill before the magic smoke escaped. Fortunately, I was able to roll back home.

Anyway, here's a shot of a pill bug on some stringy stonecrop.
