I used black glass shards as back- and underground and diffuse daylight. The dark field isolates a tiny branch with bright yellow, yellow, and orange-yellow lichens. There are soft transitions, no harsh specular highlights on the thallus surface, and the small cup structures remain readable without blown edges.

The lichens on this tiny twig are light green to yellow. A tiny light green moss plant grows among them. The twig was placed on and in front of black glass shards by day.

And as a bonus, here's that second red velvet mite encountering a much larger arachnid cousin, one of the many common forest wolf spiders (Pardosa lugubris complex) in our garden presently.

If the wolf spider looks shocked, it was – it decided that it didn't much like the little red fellow scuttling around it, & promptly dropped off into the undergrowth below.

A red velvet mite crawling towards the hind legs of a much larger wolf spider, speckled in various shades of brown, the latter sunning itself on some red sandstone.

Well, one thing is certain – these are both red velvet mites in the family Trombidiidae.

They were photographed close together, but I'm not sure if they're from the same species or genus even.

Given the shape & dimples seen in the second, fuzzy shot, I suspect genus Allothrombium, the sumo mites, but ...

There are sooo many species of these little arachnids ... 😱

A macro photograph shows two lichen species on a concrete wall. One species displays all shades from pale yellow to orange-yellow, while the other is light gray and has many thin stems, some of which are coiled into spirals. Both species are often found growing together, even when there is enough space for them to coexist. This suggests a beneficial relationship between the two.

Bold striping against dark brown creates clean graphic contrast against the leaf. Open-wing perches like this are rare.

There’s always another story waiting to be seen.

$A wet CD was illuminated outdoors during the day with white LED light. The CD's surface refracts the light rays, which are then reflected and refracted by the droplets. The center of the CD, of which only a small portion is visible, appears like a dark sun from which thin beams of light emanate, each in several rainbow colours. These beams of light are visible within the droplets.$
