Took the car for a longer drive today and figured it was the perfect chance to test navigation on my #linuxphone . Тhe road is really winding, so it's easy to see if the position tracking is accurate. I wasn’t expecting much since, when I’m stationary, all apps seem to drift by about 100 meters. To my surprise #PureMaps was just as precise as OsmAnd on Android, which I kept running side-by-side for comparison.
So, on #pixel3a with #postmarketos GPS works perfectly when you’re on the move.

The Mastodon app seems smoother here than on iOS.

My #pixel3a seems to have gotten worse at multitasking. I can't have both #jellyfin and #newpipe open at once for example. One of them gets unloaded from memory/closed. So there's a wait when switching back as the app loads again.

I don't remember this behaviour. Even multitasking with 1 or 2 heavy web pages was OK. Recently I've had the browser close while opening a password manager.

Wonder if its the OS that has changed, or apps becoming RAM greedy

• The file chooser portal was migrated to Rust making the wallpaper portal the last non-Rust one that exposes UI
• feedbackd now recognizes the haptic motor on the #Fairphone5
• The flash LED will be less bright when using it as notification LED on the #Pixel3A

I daily drive a #pixel3a with #phosh and #postmarketos (stable) and use #Signal Desktop on it (from here: https://signalflatpak.github.io/signal/). The last Signal-Update (to Version 7.72) completely messed up the graphics so that Signal is not usable anymore. Anyone else experiencing this? Or is it a problem with the/my Pixel3a? #linuxmobile #mobilelinux

so, i switched from spotify to #qobuz... for reasons... now i own a #hifi device (albeit entry level). for the price, the #hiby #m300 is pretty solid with my #koss #portapro headphones. especially since i've had my porta pros for like 3 or 4 years.

@enriquericos i am daily driving #postmarketos on a google #pixel3a which are quiet cheap as used ones. everything works fine for me, except the camera is really(!) bad right know. however, if you need waydroid for whatsapp, i do not know if it is powerful enough. the #oneplus6t is much stronger, but had an annoying call issue when i tried a year ago, do not know what the state is today. i use @signalapp as messenger and the desktop version runs super smooth.

@ppulfer @fell @postmarketOS uh, you daily drive it? nice! when i tried that one year ago there was always a problem with audio/calls. you had to restart the phone after each call, otherwise you could not hear the other person. thats why i switched to the #pixel3a with #pmos. but since the #OP6T is way more powerful, i would love to switch back as soon as the problem is solved!

Guess what? I got the lens focus driver working on my #Pixel3a running #postmarketOS

It's still very messy and I haven't found out the correct values for everything but I can set the focus using my poor-mans PipeTap.

I'm on vacation for the next 2 weeks so I won't have time to work on getting it upstreamed but if you want to play around with it you can pm me to get the patch.

Sometimes I look at video reviews of the #pixel3a postmarketOS port. It's helpful to receive feedback, even if it's intended to inform others about the state. It's also nice to look back and see how much progress we made.

It's also easy for the reviews to become outdated when I try to address the comments raised. Videos require a lot more effort than filling a checklist.

@simplex I think that statistics for even Linux desktop users are not too reliable as they generally dislike/distrust #telemetry and tracking, so Linux phone user count could be difficult.

If follower count here on the fediverse is anything to go by, the largest #LinuxPhone-related accounts @pine64, @purism, @postmarketOS appear to have around 13-10k followers. If app download count can give as a hint, the Gnome Calls app (originally made by Purism) was downloaded over 50k times from Flathub https://flathub.org/apps/org.gnome.Calls

As for devices, phones sold with Linux preinstalled include the #Librem5, #LibertyPhone, #PinePhone, #PinePhonePro, #Flx1 and #JollaC2.

Some older Android devices repurposed to install Linux include #OnePlus6, #Pixel3a and #Fairphone5.

I guess my concern today is what happens when custom roms stop supporting the #pixel3a ?
It's an aging phone. People have put in a lot of work into roms for it (#LineageOS, #CalyxOS, #AXPOS), but from what I gather building Android ROMs is a huge mess, and needs lots of computing resources.
I'd like to think it will be possible to keep using it for years to come with #MainlineLinux, #postmarketOS or some similar project
