#privatisation

@ChrisMayLA6 The insurance hazards of AI remind me of tangles with UK nuclear power.

In the late 1980s, as the Thatcher govt moved towards #privatisation of electricity generation, they planned to include nuclear in the package. Greenpeace employed insurance and investment specialists to do an assessment of the value of the electricity sector with nuclear included or excluded. The report reckoned tens of billions without nuclear, or zero with the risks and cleanup of nuclear included.

New analysis by Reclaiming Our Regional Economies warned that public money is being rapidly funnelled out of the care system into the hands of private companies, rather than reinvested to improve services.

Colour me surprised..

Maybe privatising services that were previously funded by governments & delivered by community based non-profits was never a good idea in the first place.

Maybe incentives to generate profit do not improve service delivery. Maybe the idea that ‘the market always does it better’ was a scam all along.

Maybe if we follow the money we could see who has profited from this privatised system & what their connections are with those who make policy.

Maybe we could do better.

@26pglt
Totally agree with you.

Without loophole-proof regulations, legislation and strong enforcement processes, #Capitalism will run way with your money, strip you naked and eventually kill you. That, is the sine qua non of #Privatisation as it embodies the very worse aspects of human nature. #StateCapture is a craft practiced by every #Grifter and the #Corporations they create.

#London #Transport (LT) News (No. 410 - September 24 1992) clipping:
Dr Alan Watkins, appointed LT’s new vice chairman and chief executive, pledged to meet as many staff as possible during his settling-in period. Taking responsibility for London Buses, London Underground and LT Trading, he aimed to support long-term planning amid the proposed bus #deregulation and #privatisation. Watkins, formerly of Hawker Siddeley and Lucas Industries, described himself as a supporter of deregulation and stressed addressing employee concerns quickly. He valued LT’s professional staff, emphasised continued investment in public transport, and brought management experience and personal insight as a passenger.

A newspaper clipping from LT News No. 410, September 24, 1992, features a large headline: "Deregulation: preparing ourselves for the future."

The main image is a portrait of Dr Alan Watkins, the new chief executive of London Transport (LT). The accompanying text is an interview with him, discussing his hopes and ambitions, the challenges of bus deregulation and privatisation, the future of the Underground system, and his personal background and hobbies.

An argument in favour of private healthcare, education, housing etc is that it offers customers choice.

Thing is, I don‘t want to be a customer. I am a citizen.

I don‘t want to have to choose between healthcare plans, or expensive schools or housing.

I want all my basic needs covered by the government. Period.

It is my right, as a citizen, to demand comprehensive care by the organised whole (state). This is what the social contract is about.
