As a #Cyclist who is fortunate enough to live in a place where I can #Cycle all year round, #Autumn has come to be known to me as #PunctureSeason. With many #paths festooned with fallen sharp twigs and small branches, particularly after heavy winds, it’s sometimes like riding over an unavoidable set of #Stingers and to avoid them all is virtually impossible and one’s vehicle eventually succumbs to the inevitable.

@markmccaughrean This was about 20 years ago, and your post stimulated me to finally look up what kind of plant this could have been. It most probably was the aptly named #puncture vine: tribulus terrestris (reddit immediately supplied the answer and a perfect picture).
It may not be uncommon in Southern Europe but although we have use our bikes there quite a lot (often off road) this was the only time we had this problem.

Earlier this week, I realized my front #bike #tyre had a slow #puncture. A minor inconvenience to replace the #InnerrTube as I always try to have a spare one just in case (it’s a matter of when, not if). So, I replaced the tube and pumped it up to about 6 atmospheres (the outer tyre is rated for 6-9 atmospheres) but as I was putting my tools away, the inner tyre exploded with a large bang, just like a balloon would, only louder.

This tiny thorn caused me a #puncture today.

Thankfully, I am #prepared for this inevitability and always carry a toolkit and a spare tube inside the frame of my #brompton, aswell as a pump on the frame.
(I love how neatly all of that packs.)

I could've patched the tube but decided to simply swap it and patch it later.
It took a while because it's my first time but I wasn't in a hurry.

There was a really nice bench nearby to work on and a small #creak to wash my hands in afterwards.

Air escapes from my tire
Nowhere to change it

Got my other bike out of the garage to find it had a flat tyre. The inner tube had split where it bears against a (rim tape protected) spoke end. There were similar cracks forming at almost every other spoke end. Not seen that before.

First half of the day was taken up because I had to walk my bicycle home with a back wheel puncture at the apex point of my morning cycle (just coming off from the pier of Royal Wharf), which I’m sure you all appreciate is heavy going

I fixed the puncture and after the patch was on securely (the first patch didn’t feel good so I ripped it off while it was still possible to and re-sanded the area and put another patch on it) I ran my fingers around the inside of the tyre as I couldn’t see any obvious intrusion (always run your fingers round the inside to feel for sharpness) and I felt something really sharp and lengthy and then saw the top of it embedded in the tyre – it would definitely have re-punctured it again as soon as I put the inner tube back into the tyre and pumped it up again

Apropos of this, to all inconsiderate cunts who smash glass out in public on pathways etc (and there’s a lot more broken glass now than there ever used to be for some reason), you’re not only inconveniencing cyclists but also people with wheelchairs, people with prams, little children on bicycles, dogs, children playing, etc – just stop smashing glass out in public, you cunts
