#subtext

2025-07-10

The wild thing to me about studying subtext is when you pull it up to look closely, it doesn't feel like subtext. It feels too obvious. But it really is & it really works. That's the magic.

In this class, we'll do the incredible work of close reading--together with other writers--to pull up the subtext of stories & figure out how it works.

Online/live meetings: 6-8pm (Central), Thursdays, 7/17 -- 8/21

The Power of Unspoken Words: How to Write Subtext in Fiction

[From KMW: I’m taking a quick sabbatical this week. I’ll be back next Monday with a post/podcast about “The Disillusionment Arc in Storytelling: A Powerful Tool for Character Growth.” Until then, I hope you enjoy this short post on the important topic of how to write subtext in fiction!] One of the…

Stand By Me evokes heartfelt #nostalgia no matter when you grew up, and it offers valuable lessons anyone can relate to. But as I rewatched it last night, I realized I must have seen it quite differently than how my father saw it.

A quotation from Orwell

But every writer, especially every novelist, has a “message”, whether he admits it or not, and the minutest details of his work are influenced by it. All art is propaganda. Neither Dickens himself nor the majority of Victorian novelists would have thought of denying this. On the other hand, not all propaganda is art.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1939), “Charles Dickens,” sec. 5, Inside the Whale (1940-03-11)

#Fear is an interesting #concept for a #movie.
The real #horror isn’t the #monster or #demon that’s trying to kill you.

It actually is that we believe in our fears and that makes them real.

I see it more than a horror movie. It’s more like a way to self criticize ourselves and see that what hold us back is our fear to (you name it).

Neither is a good or a bad movie, but has an interesting #SubText.

t-shirt idea: ask me about my #subtext

So I ignored Rule 1 at my own peril and suffered the consequences. If you are wondering, rule #1 is:
- it's the firewall,
Meanwhile, rule #2 is:
- it's DNS.
It was my local Subtext 'proxy box' to block telnet abuse that was doing something weird with FidoNet connections. At least I got MacTCP 2.1 out of this.

@jcs - for some reason all I get is -23015 errors hitting the FSX host (openFailed). It worked one time randomly. Even went from MacTCP 2.0.4 to 2.1 and no help. Not DNS.

If you have a Policy for which people regularly get exceptions, what's the point of having said Policy?

He asks, rhetorically?

You can't beat KISS. I forgot what the format was of the UDP packet data that @jcs designed Subtext to send the trusted host when there is a bad actor trying to telnet in as root, admin, etc..

So i wrote a small python script to listen to UDP and display the payload of any packet that arrives.. (gist.github.com/dillera/89c94e)

And the payload was... just the IP address. Perfect. There wasn't much to say about that, it does the job :)
