90% of websites are used to feed you with text and pictures but, for some reason, they insist doing it in the most complicated possible way, which requires you to upgrade your browser regularly. If your job involves giving user text through multiple layers of javascript or to get data about users thanks to the aforementioned javascript, you are part of the problem (this is a fact, not a judgement. We all need to feed our kids). If you write code which, as some point, involves a browser but you really believe that it’s more than just giving text and pictures, then think again, you probably don’t understand what you are doing.

New #blog post: A Time-Traveler's Guide to Affordable Computing

https://rldane.space/a-time-travelers-guide-to-affordable-computing.html

1467 words

Ok, I heard some fair complaints about my schlocky previous post, and this one is much more serious. Ok, what am I saying?? It's straight-up sci-fi comedy with a retrocomputing subject matter, but I took it seriously.

Initially, I was inspired by CJ's wonderful blost about his transition from being a long-term mac user to now daily-driving Linux, and wanted to share my own experiences as a long-term Mac user over nearly two decades, with a decade and a half separating the two times. But then my internal Sotolf mental processes went off and reminded me of how elitist and anti-common-person / anti-consumer / anti-human Apple was, and I went in a very different direction.

I hope y'all enjoy the humor. :D

Minor #CW: some of the humor is of a USPOL nature. It's very light, humor and presentation-wise, but the implications are pretty dark, if you take it seriously (which you're not intended or likely inclined to!)

cc: my wonderful #chorus: @joel @dm @sotolf @thedoctor @pixx @orbitalmartian @adamsdesk @krafter @roguefoam @clayton @giantspacesquid @Twizzay @stfn

(I will happily add/remove you from the chorus upon request! :)

I think most things labeled under deconstruction(ism) were originally invented by a toddler.

A quotation from Orwell

But every writer, especially every novelist, has a “message”, whether he admits it or not, and the minutest details of his work are influenced by it. All art is propaganda. Neither Dickens himself nor the majority of Victorian novelists would have thought of denying this. On the other hand, not all propaganda is art.

George Orwell (1903-1950) English writer [pseud. of Eric Arthur Blair]
Essay (1939), “Charles Dickens,” sec. 5, Inside the Whale (1940-03-11)

despite their endless claims of being naturally superior, competent, logical and gifted, the men patriarchy excretes persist—lacking as they do even the minimum skills required to look after themselves—in being uniquely unqualified to make them.

Does the difference between The Left and The Right boil down to criticism of or uncritical belief in an external authority by virtue of whom you are entitled to every windfall of happenstance, being that it is rightful fruit of the *labour of uncritical belief itself*?

A quotation from La Bruyere, Jean de:

«
There is this disadvantage to be endured in reading books by members of some party or faction, that they do not always give us the truth. Facts are distorted, opposing points of view are not stated with sufficient force or with complete accuracy; and the most longsuffering reader must tire at last of such a great number…

Sex in art needs no excuses: Sexuality itself is a legitimate subject for artistic exploration

The very phrase "gratuitous sex" implies the idea that depictions of sex must somehow be earned.

I’m Not An Idiot or a Heretic
To be honest, it's more than a little galling to be told that I don't take the Bible seriously by people who wouldn't know a hapax legomenon if it bit them on the nose.

A quotation from Hand, Learned:

«
Historians may be dogmatists, I know, though not so often now as when history was dogma. At least you will perhaps agree that even a smattering of history and especially of letters will go far to dull the edges of uncompromising conviction. No doubt one may quote history to support any cause, as…
