The acronym TACO, meaning Trump Always Chickens Out, and the phrase TACO Trade, referring to US President Trump’s practise of making tariff threats only to back down on them later, has inspired many jokes and memes involving the Mexican culinary dish of a tortilla filled with a topping called a taco about his habit of erratically changing tack and turning tail in retreat, and etymologically this might make sense. The culinary use of the word taco is a Mexican Spanish innovation, but it seems to come from an already existing Spanish word taco which had a range of meanings including “plug, peg, wadding”, which itself seems to have been borrowed from a Germanic source, from Proto-Germanic *tag-, ultimately traceable back to the Proto-Indo-European root *dek- used in reference to such things as a “fringe, lock of hair, horsetail”. This Germanic root was also borrowed into Old French as tache “nail, fastening”, becoming Old Northern French taque “nail, pin, peg”, and finally borrowed into English as tack, which by the 15th c. was applied to the “ropes, cables, etc. fastening a ship’s sails”, and thus by metonymy to tack or to change tack came to mean “to change the direction of a boat”, and this nautical term came to be used figuratively to refer to other changes.

The PIE root *dek- came into English another way from the suffixed o-grade form *dok-lo- which became Germanic *taglaz and then Old English tægel or tægl “tail”, eventually becoming Modern English tail, with the phrase to turn tail coming from falconry.

Shown is what I believe is a buckle from horses’ tack. The prong is iron, and rusted, but the main frame is undoubtedly brass (non-magnetic and shows as such under a scratch).

The dog randomly dug this up in the backyard, in an area we just cleared of brush. I could ask my sister if she recalls losing this: we had over 30 horses at one time, but don’t think she’d recall as that was 50 years ago. Happily there were no bones present, so it wasn’t a burial site.
