#Cotoneaster #berries. They're similar to firethorn plants but are thornless with serated leaf margins. Their flowers & fruits are toxic for humans but have excellent #WildlifeValue.
These are #larval food plants for several insects. Their flowers attract many #pollinators. Their fruits are eaten by multiple birds - blackbirds especially love eating these berries in Winter.
It's been cultivated by landscapers for wildlife value & soil erosion prevention. It's grown in many public & private areas around here - I see it almost everywhere. Birds have spread their seeds afar.

I don't know which variety of cotoneaster this is - there are a lot of varieties.

The background shows lush greenery which could indicate that the photo was taken at a park during spring or summer. There is no definitive indication of age range but it seems to be mature adults possibly in late middle ages judging by wrinkles visible on faces, particularly prominent around eyes for female subjects.

A young blackthorn (prunus spinosa), now leafless, stands sentinel at the side of the footpath. Its purple-black berries, known as sloes, remain intact, as yet untouched by the birds.

Closeup of a spindly, yellow flower with dozens of petals spotting off in every direction. The flower is on a bare branch of the shrub, with all of its leaves having fallen off in the last 72 hours.

Looking up at a branch that still has dozens of yellow leaves along with the yellow flowers. Most of the branches have shed their leaves but this one is holding on a bit longer. The leaves have reddish veins and fringed edges.

A 15 foot high Witch Hazel growing on the edge of the woods. It is in full bloom, its yellow flowers like mini fireworks dense in every branch. Nearly all the leaves have fallen, leaving just the flowers.

"Join Boot Boutwell to explore the world of native New England shrubs in autumn!

"Shrubs are a key part of New England landscapes. This program will take a close look at about ten common native New England shrubs, such as high bush blueberry, silky dogwood, sheep laurel, meadowsweet and steeplebush as well as a few non-native invasive shrubs. The program will focus on plant identification as well as fun and interesting #NaturalHistory. We’ll see a plant which colonial Americans used to make candles, a plant whose fruit sea captains used to bring on long voyages to help prevent scurvy, and a plant which the Chippewa used to restore balance in their lives. And as winter is coming and the leaves are going, we’ll also consider some winter identification characteristics. Children ages 10 and up are welcome to register if accompanied by an adult."
