This morning’s lecture: #Anthropocene #Technosolutionism essentially spends an hour defining these two terms, their interrelations, and sampling some artistic projects past and present that relate to them.

It’s also grown into an opportunity to bring Patricia Johanson’s practice out of obscurity (look her up!)

Could someone PLEASE explain to the minister that the law and regulation has sharp, age-related boundaries for various things not because people suddenly become responsible or less vulnerable on their 18th birthday but because the law needs to appeal to something verifiable rather than the ethically significant but fuzzily-boundaried concepts like 'adult' and 'child'. Whatever happened to all the #blockchain projects? Not the outright cryptoswindle type but all these ambitious and noble ideas to generate trust and accountability in #supplychain etc.

Maybe if people spent some time doing hype postmortems, the next hype wave would be less embarrassing? Building a sort of immunity against naive #technosolutionism

The cumulating decades of wasted tech potential may become something we'll deeply regret as the real problems we are facing keep pilling up.

A major reason why #technosolutionism is a caricature and not part of an actual solution toolkit is that many strands of technology are abstracted away to serve the same old social purposes. It does not matter if its a mace, a sword, a gun, a jet or a flying saucer if the objective is always the same.

But "social tech", from taboos to religions, politics, laws and financial systems are immensely powerful as they change objectives: the same physical reality organized in different ways.

Right now I am not arguing against #AI as a corporate tool, as an unsustainable, power-hungry privacy nightmare.

There are ways to train it locally and host on more sustainable infrastructure.

I am arguing against the very basic #technosolutionism of AI, which is the anti-thesis of #solarpunk :

Trying to solve each problem with an app which you do NOT understand, which you do NOT analyze, which can lead to terrible consequences down the road.

@canadaduane #solarpunk is about understanding the human context of a problem before attempting a technical solution for it.

#vibeCoding is the exact opposite of that, throwing mindless #AI copy-pasta at a prompt until something executable is made.

We need to get away from #technoSolutionism , not make it easier to drown in it!
