I've a question about Kate/KWrite:

Is there a quick way to highlight just one line of text?

On Gnome Text Editor/Gedit/Pluma/Xed you can triple click, and that highlights the line. On Kate/Kwrite, though, triple clicking also highlights the newline character at the end of the line: I don't want to do that.

I tried looking in the "configure shortcuts" settings menu and didn't see a way to create a shortcut for highlighting one line, either with the mouse or keyboard.

Can it be done?

Tech question:
I have a static page on my own domain using Codeberg Pages.

I would like to use the same domain name for email. Disroot describes how to point my domain to Disroot for email using a
txt record.

My question is, if I follow Disroot's instructions, will it mess up the website I have on the same domain?

Do I need an OpenPGP key and link it to my Keyoxide profile in order to get the green verified badge on Mastodon?

Looking for some more advanced techies to help me out here. I was browsing the files of old abandonware (as one does) and came across the .zym file format in a game called Gubble 2. Does anyone have any idea what this file format is? Is it something proprietary by the gubble devs? Something that just isn't used anymore? The only thing google brought up regarding .zym was some mods for quake.

A list of gubble 2 files ending in the format .ZYM

What's the best way to convert a LaTeX equation into an ASCII art image?

I tried putting the equation in a tex document and using
@pandoc@fosstodon.org to convert to markdown:

pandoc -o example.md example.tex

But the generated markdown file did not contain a rendered formula: it just had the TeX code.

Motivation: I want to put formula in a gemini capsule.

EDIT: SOLVED by
@lukyan@lukyan.eu !

I installed a distrobox of Fedora, then I installed the rpm package
libtexprintf-tools. The command
utftex "\frac{\mathrm{This is an example equation}}{\mathrm{This is still an example equation}}"
Gives me
   This is an example equation

It's time to think about my mom's computer again:
So, I got her a WD Blue 1 TB SATA SSD and I wanna give her 2 OSes: Windows 10 LTSC Enterprise 2021, and a Linux distro.
Which Linux option do you think would be best for her? Feel free to elaborate in the replies!

As an alternative, is there a way to edit wiki pages from a shell script on my desktop? That would probably make it possible to automate.

#MediaWiki #Wiki #Wikis #TechHelp #TechQuestions #Sed

I have a MediaWiki question!

I frequently find myself needing to do the following:
a)Add a page to Category X, where X is dependent on a parameter
b)Add Category X to Category Y, where Y is dependent on the same parameter as part (a)
c)Add Category X to Category Z, which is not dependent on a parameter.

I can automate the first step using a simple template that contains
[[Category:Something with my parameter]], but I want help automating the next two steps.

I realize I'm maybe being a bit vague, so let me clarify with a concrete example (the example that inspired this question).

When
@comicsbyxan published Chapter 11 of Pandora's Tale, I made the corresponding wiki article. The chapter was the first appearance of new character Amelia, so I wanted to
* List in the chapter article that it was the first appearance of Amelia.
* Include the chapter article in
Category:Amelia appearances
* Include
Category:Amelia appearances in Category:Amelia
* Include
Category:Amelia appearances in Category:Chapters by character appearances

The first two bullet points I can do simultaneously,
thanks to the simple "appearances" template.. I just add

{a|Amelia}
To the article on Chapter 11. But I have to do the third and fourth bullet point manually. While that's not a big deal to do once, I have to do it for every new character Xan adds to the comic. Chapter 10 introduced nine new characters at once, so I had to do it nine times.

Is there a way to soup up my {a} template so that when I type, for example,
{a|Example New Character}, it automatically creates a page for Category:Example New Character appearances and includes it in both Category:Example New Character and Category:Chapters by character appearances ? Is this the kind of thing I should to learn Lua Modules for or is there a way to do it purely with wiki markup?

The hard part seems to be that I want to invoke a template in one article and have it modify a
different page. I haven't found any wiki functions that can do that.

UPDATE 2
I fixed it!
Here's the code that makes it work
[[{{{1}}}]][[Category:{{{1}}} appearances]]{{#if:{{{new|}}}|{{#createpageifnotex:
Category:{{{1}}} appearances
|<nowiki>[[Category:</nowiki>{{{1}}}<nowiki>]][[Category:Chapters by character appearances]]</nowiki>
}}|}}

My iMac is 9 years old, permanently stuck in Monterey, and at end of life for security updates. More and more apps are notifying me that they are unable to update. But it does everything I need it to do.

Should I go ahead and buy a MacBook before the end of the year and possible tarrifs, or just stick with the iMac until it dies? I truly hate that computers make themselves obsolete so quickly, but at what point does being online become unsafe?

Firefox question:

In about:preferences->general->colors, you can choose colors to override Firefox's default scheme for websites. I choose a solid black background and a medium gray for text.

However, it seems this setting does not apply to Firefox in reader mode: I still get a gray background and whiteish text.

Is there a way to change this?

a question via Google search - (does) pixel 8 privacy screen protector support fingerprint sensor(?) -

Google search and topic

draft - seems like the answer 'might' be no? Or? Anyone else have a successful product like this? Is it to do with the type of sensor? *Would* an ultrasonic sensor do any better? Do ultrasonic fingerprint sensors even work with glass screen protectors?

One of the more noxious behaviors from people in the tech world that I see all the time, especially on StackOverflow:

Person A: I have a need of doing X with product Y; how can I do this?

Person B: You shouldn't want to do X!

Person B of course has little or no insight into the full context of why Person A needs to do X; instead, they just assume there's no conceivable reason why X might be the right thing to do.

There's a very good chance that there's a legitimate reason behind why Person A is asking, and it isn't just to be frivolous or because they think asking questions and trying to do random things with a product is fun.

If the broader context matters, then ask for the broader context. Don't just assume the context must necessarily be wrong because you don't understand it.
