Magnetische Rekonnektion tritt auf, wenn Aktivität der Sonne mit Magnetfeld der Erde interagiert. Um die magnetische Rekonnexion an der Magnetopause der Erde zu untersuchen, fliegt TRACERS durch den polaren Scheitelpunkt, einen Punkt, an dem das Magnetfeld der Erde zum Boden hin abfällt. Dort strömen die Partikel durch den Scheitelpunkt in einen konzentrierten Teil unserer Atmosphäre.

#SpaceX launches a pair of #NASA #satellites to probe the origins of #spaceweather
Twin #spacecraft are part of #TRACERS mission, which will spend at least a year measuring #plasma conditions in narrow regions of #Earth's #magneticfield known as polar cusps. These regions are located over the poles. They play an important but poorly understood role in creating colorful auroras as plasma streaming out from the Sun interacts with the magnetic field surrounding Earth.

A few hours ago, NASA's two TRACERS satellites were launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force Base. After about an hour and 40 minutes, they successfully separated from the rocket's last stage to begin the maneuvers that will place them in a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 600 kilometers.
