Less the archer-sergeant brought me from the house to a rather ornamental orchard with glowing blossoms atop an old rampart, with good sight of the river’s western side and downriver along the island’s shore. There stood a wide bower set with couches and a low table. Some of the food was good, and I managed to try every dish. Naturally, Lady Vaeol and Remaue were there, but also the four sergeants - Tae, Erymi, Less, and Oshis - which made a small, private affair among the feylights and glowing flowers. Along with a fairly strong, spicy wine, they brought forth a pipe, which if it didn’t hold hemp-gum, held something so close that the difference doesn’t matter. I partook with the Lashunta, which soon had us all loose and easy.

Due to the drug, too late I first came aware of Tae and Erymi, the two Damaya sergeants, who came to sit beside me. Erymi reached up, touched my face, and then laid her brow-feelers against my head in what I’ve come to think as a Lashunta kiss. Tae followed suit. Under the pipe-smoke’s thrall, they felt good, and I took them both in my arms.

Idly I wondered that Oshis and Less, these two women's lovers, were doing. At last I noticed both men were kneeling before Lady Vaeol, where they had clasped her and were worshiping at her bosom’ altar. Remaue crouched between them lower while the rosy knight’s head lolled. Her feelers trailed over theirs, clearly sharing whatever they experienced through their uncanny mind-bond. Her sight struck me like a slap.

The artist meant for this to be a dragon (Glaurung, if memory serves). Yet if one changed the scale, why couldn't it be a Shotalashu? Which begs the question: why would a Shota be sitting on a bed of gold?

The prospect of psychically bonded mounts raises so many possibilities beyond merely transport. If a Lashunta rider needs something guarded, who better to guard? Also, something tells me Shotalashu make the best baby-sitters. Who's going to mess with a kid watched by a horse-sized lizard with claws designed for tree-climbing?

Today I did something I had not done in overlong. I went to see my father.

On my ask yesternight, Lady-Mother told he now works at the Sun Temple. So there I went and found him on the western doorway. At my sight he brightened and hugged me. I told him on my deeds since outriderhood and of the Aslanta’s fetch, and that I would soon leave for Qabarat to host them. He read me to beware, for he has little trust for outland folk, both for Qabarat and the Aslanta.

He showed me what he is working on. This door’s warden-likenesses have much crumbled. He has gotten the job (with Lady-Mother’s goodwill) to mend them. He will also add a roofway to offkeep rain and hopefully ward them from crumbling anew. He has in mind a twosome of Damaya warriors. He then said he needs a life-model and beseeched if I would stand for him. I forecaughtly answered I would be honored but must keep my forquest to Qabarat. He answered that shall stay all right, for he must first build the roofway. Then he bade me not to tarry too long with outlanders and offworlders, and kissed my shoulder.

Despite the Lashunta maintaining a continuous civilization for 12,000 Earth/Golarion years, their world does not lack for ruins. These include abandoned cities like Hesenya that once sat between the Yaro Valley and the Lower Marshes until the Thief-Queens razed it, Reiefya that once sat within the delta and rivaled Qabarat, Halla of the Warrior-Princesses, Lost Hoshiasa, which was not even a Lashunta city but ruled by the alien Moqeva, and the legend overshadowing them all: Valmaea, the Colonies’ last outpost against the conquering Formian swarms. Castrovel has no end of ruins to explore if one is willing to risk a little danger.

After four days travel, today we again reached the Yaro River and ferried across to Son, where Lady Vaeol and the others brought me to our company’s house. Then they left, doubtlessly to make report. I found much awaiting me and have had little time until now.

The men welcomed me back gladly, but were also mightily upset. They told word that we are to leave Son in two days’ time, when we will be taken to another place named Khabarat. At that name my ears perked. I bade them not to worry, for I told I had heard of this other city, and furthermore there are elfgates and maybe even a way back home. This got their eager interest, and I bade them continue readiness for travel, which apparently will be by boat. I then spoke with Thalaes our steward, who confirmed the word had come from Princess Zhasael who heads the Matrons’ Senate (and is Lady Vaeol’s mother). Lady Vaeol doubtlessly was even then receiving the same word, for which I thanked him.

Thanks to Lady Vaeol’s tongue-spell, I had a lively talk with a couple older Korasha fellows, farmers and hunters with thinning pates and fully, bushy beards, who had come for a drink. They kept calling me Master Elf, seemingly due to my height, and treated me to some cups of bragget. They spoke of their children, some who dwell here or have gone elsewhere, some who even now serve in the militia, and one who has gone off to a war in some stead called Valmae-yana, which was the first I’ve heard. They spoke of their wives, to whom they are beholden though unafraid of voicing complaint, for much of their speech regarded arguments with their mistresses. Of Son they had respectful word, though I got hint they do not misgive the city lying several days away, which leaves these villagers to their own business. After so much strange and wonderful over these weeks, it was refreshing just to listen to common folk. If I shut my eyes, I could see them as a couple old farmers sitting in a tavern back where I grew up.

Last night, the astrologers invited me to the main observatory. It was scarcely an hour after dusk when they showed me a bright blue star through the dome’s open shutter. They had already aimed a great spyglass I reckoned twenty feet long, the largest I have ever seen, at that spot. They bade me look through the eyepiece, wherein I saw a ball that looked almost like a child’s marble: white shot swirlingly through an otherwise blue gem, and quite pretty. Furthermore, while I watched, a pale bright point emerged from behind, almost like another star, and settled beside the larger azure parent.

I pulled back from the spyglass and eyed the blue star, the night’s brightest. A queer thought struck me. I reckoned how Castrovel, with its distinct green-silver hue, is the brightest star in our sky back home. When I turned to my hosts, they were all grinning at me. 'The Blue Queen' they named the star: Golarion. The telescope was showing me home. That bright point breaking from its rim was the Moon as it circles endlessly through Heaven’s ether. The white streaks over watery blue were clouds.

I think I made some light joke about it looking smaller than I remember. In truth, I was fighting to keep from tearing up. I know I’d been missing home, but had not forethought it would hit me so hard.
